Book Reviews of Zondervan NIV Study BibleBook Review: Great Bible, Wish I had bought Leather bound indexed instead... Summary: 4 Stars
This is a great Bible. I just wish I had purchased the leather bound indexed version of this Bible instead. The hard cover makes it hard to flip through, and with a leather bible you can open it up and set it down on your lap, a table, etc.. Unfortunately with this hard cover Bible when you are opening it to anything but the middle it wants to close on you.
Also, it would be so helpful if it were indexed. I'm no Bible expert, by far! And I am still not completely familiar as to where all of the books in the Bible are located. The index feature is nice to have when you are in Sunday School or a Bible study group and you need to flip through your bible to different books.
But over-all this is a fantastic version of the Bible. The NIV is the number one selling version in the U.S. and therefore alot of other people are using this version as well. Which is nice again in sunday school and bible study groups. I also love the study guide at the bottom of each page, it is really helpful for someone who hasn't read/studied the bible much. It is a great tool for understanding the message, the culture, and the history of the bible. Study bibles are the only way to go, in my opinion!!
Book Review: Balanced Commentary on Most Verses Summary: 4 Stars
Though the scholars' notes hardly replace a Biblical commentary, their notes are insightful and balanced. Many controversial subjects in the Bible (e.g., slavery, women, etc.) are given multiple Protestant perspectives. The perspectives, however, are usually on a convervative to moderate continuum - not liberal, that is, there is never a comment that states an extreme liberal point of view (e.g., "Some believe the Bible is not the word of God" or "This philosophy was used in many Eastern religions, and therefore some believe that all religions lead to God). If you're looking for a completely balanced commentary that gives the extreme views, this isn't it. However, if you're looking for a commentary that gives multiple views within a more traditional continuum, then this is a fantastic study Bible.
Book Review: Classic for reading, excellent resources, but not so great for easy bible study Summary: 4 Stars
The New International Version is excellent for readability and overall quality. This version has the most resources of any bible version around. However, because it is only 52% consistent with the original language (Old Testament comparison only) you cannot do serious bible study without using a concordance and the other fine resources offered.
Book Review: Solid and durible NIV Summary: 4 Stars
This is the Bible (the leather version) that I have used since college. It has served me well. The NIV is a reliable and readable translation. I prefer the Study Bible versions because they have ample footnotes that give additional background information to help the reader understand the passages on that page. The NIV has a good reading flow.
Book Review: some thing that should be in your library Summary: 4 Stars
Useful, full of information. Although I was looking for something to give more historical and cultural information for questionable verses, but it helped me very much. I believe that there can't be more than this information in a study Bible. Not easy to use, some references are mistake.
