Book Review: Excellent Bible for personal study

I'm going to review the book published by Zondervan, and not talk about "The Bible" itself.
If you've made up your mind to read The Bible, this is an excellent book to use. What I liked about it was that it is a widely accepted translation, excellent commentary on most every verse (important to someone like me that did not grow up reading The Bible), and a lot of contextual information (drawings, book introductions, etc).
For the uninitiated, it is a toss-up between this and the Quest Study Bible, also published by Zondervan. The Quest has a slight edge for the lay person as opposed to the serious Bible student -- it has answers to a number of blunt questions that may cross your mind, but which do not classify as Bible Study.
I purchased a leather bound edition of this Bible from an Amazon seller. It was brand new, in unopened packaging, in leather, for far less than the list price of the paperback version. So, shop around the Amazon marketplace sellers before you buy.
The only quibble I have is that Zondervan does not stitch the spine of its Bibles (atleast not the one that I have). No matter how carefully you treat it, a stitched spine always beats a gummed spine. See if you can get an edition with a stitched spine for a few extra dollars. It will be worth it.
Book Review: One of the best study Bible ever (in english)

This Bible is great.It has notes all over the place.one thing is that its an NIV and I (a Puerto Rican) can read this Bible (I also like the NKJV). This Bible has everything, maps, notes, refenrences, and many other things, oh!, almost forgot it has intro to each book of the Bible, it tells you when it was written, who wrote it, to whom, the purpose of the book, and other great things. This Bible also has little drawings on the bottom (besides the notes) to help you grow in the spirit, for example, when it has a face, that means that the note is about a character or a person of the Bible, when it has a shovel,it'll show you archaeology stuff, and when it has a leaf, its just teachings for your growth. It also has tiny letters show you similiar verses.Its an awesome study Bible that will boast your wisdom of the word to an all-time high (if you study it).And the price is insane (got it for $20 at Wal-Mart. Hardcover, though).If you don't have a study Bible and even if you do buy this Bible it will be a great help IF you like to study the Bible (which I love, thank God!). I picked up this Bible because a friend had one, and I was intrigued by all the detailed insights and background information they were able to find on various texts. I wish I had had this Bible many years before - it's like having a seminarian standing by to answer your questions. Though I read other editions of the Bible, if I could only have one edition I would choose this one - I reach for it constantly to get explanations and background on various verses. The notes also are well-balanced, including different interpretations when this is the case. It is also filled with good illustrations/maps of buildings and places in the Bible. But the aid which I find most useful is the verse-finding "concordance" in the back, whereby if you know part of a verse but can't recall where it is, you can look up the verse by an alphabetical list of key words from the part you remember. This is a very handy aid to quickly find verses that you want to quote, as well as when you want to do a study on verses addressing various topics.
If you only own one edition of the Bible, make it this one.

The NIV translation is one easiest Bibles to understand at a grade reading level of 7.8. With the added study Bible features, this becomes an excellent resource for adults or for a confirmation class. Here is what you will like:
@ Did you even wonder what Jesus was referring to when he would say, "Did you never read in the Scriptures..." The 100,000 footnotes will show you exactly what scripture is being referenced!
@ The 20,000 study notes give you deeper understanding and historical context. They stick to the facts without making political statements.

The NIV Study Bible is the Bible that our church gives to all 6th graders. As one student said, "This Bible is like a secret decoder ring."

I bought a copy of this Leather edition to replace my aging hardcover NIV Study bible. The maps, charts, tables and commentary are all excellent in this bible. Definately not at the college or seminary level, but definately a great work for a bible student. I encourage every christian to own a study bible, as I personally cannot live without one.
The NIV is an excellent translation and often far easier to read and understand over the classic King James.
However there are some theological terms that are absent from the NIV but are contained in the original KJV. Also 1 John 5:7 does not make reference to the trinity in the NIV, like it does in the KJV. Why is this? I do not know, as I have never taken a Biblical Criticism course.
