Book Reviews of Zero Station: A Science Fiction NovellaBook Review: Classic themes given new life Summary: 5 Stars
This engaging sci-fi story is full of pleasant surprises. I was skeptical when the well-tread first contact themes of communication and xenophobia turned up early. But Zero Station sidesteps cliche and delivers a compelling plot driven by well developed characters.
The Antarctic outpost serves as a good setting for the events, providing hints of a future Earth without sidetracking the story. What we do learn of recent world history is fascinating and supports the central conflict well.
What really sets the book apart is the later bits where we are treated to another perspective of events. Imagine watching a favorite movie retold from the viewpoint of a completely different character - different motivations, different scenes, but in the familiar story arc.
Without revealing too much, I'll say that the careful reader will find in this second act not just a fresh narrative style but also new insight into the plot itself. Remember that this isn't a full length sci-fi epic and you won't be disappointed when Zero Station concludes just as you've been completely drawn into the author's world.
Summary of Zero Station: A Science Fiction NovellaHumans have known for years that they are not alone in the universe. Those in power have chosen not to seek further contacts because of a tragic history, but sometimes contact cannot be avoided. When an unidentified ship crashes in Antarctica, a team is assembled to communicate with the new arrivals. First agonizing silence, then a confusing plea for help. Who or what caused the ship to crash? Will scars from the past interfere with the mission? And will the team understand the danger in time? Zero Station is a gripping tale of first contact, uniquely told from both the human side and the alien.
