Book Review: Underated but not underappreciated

Preface:

Resident Evil for the ps1 was my gateway to the RE series. I may have played the RE games in a jumbled order: Nemesis before RE2. REmake before Code Veronica and last but not least, RE4 before RE0; a shock I'm sure but Zero is now my second favorite game of the series. A vastly underrated game that I was deeply shocked to know a novelization for it even existed.

I am embarrassed to call myself a REfan and not know about the books sooner but believe me, I've been making it up as I read the series and...honestly...after reading most of them based on the games, Zero Hour stands as my favorite...and here's why....

About the Book:

(Beware, Bias Alert)
I loved the game so naturally, I enjoyed reading the book.

Ok seriously...Zero Hour gripped my attention because I actually liked the loose plot and reading extra tidbits on the new character; Billy Coen, someone who isn't a cop, an agent, a spy, or someone in on Umbrella but a fugitive who, through a strange twist of events, gets a second chance at life that seems ridiculous to win at the odds of killing hordes of zombies and monsters. Yeah, it sounds dumb if you don't open your mind to it but then again, this is Resident Evil for goodness sakes! You can't criticize that.

Certain things about the book I also found great was the handling of the story telling. It's certainly nothing new from previous REbooks but it was executed nicely and the flow didn't feel "flat" for lack of a better word. On a completely random note, the fanservice level on this book is moderately high for those interested on the relationship between Billy and Rebecca; so much that I think Perry has taken a liking to the two of them.

Conclusion:

...Of course, it's only natural for me to praise Zero Hour since I enjoyed the game to bits. That being said, I would recommend this book to those who have played the game and enjoyed it and to those who haven't played it and are curious of the story. I would NOT recommend it to those who have played the game and did NOT enjoy it...but that's obvious.

I mean, if you didn't like RE2 then what reason is there to read City of the Dead?
