Book Reviews of Zen Shorts (Caldecott Honor Book)

Book Review: This book is magic
Summary: 5 Stars

Here is a series of Buddhist short stories interwoven into a story of children and a Panda friend they have just met. The watercolor illustrations are delightful and fun. The Zen irony is thought provoking. This is the best of the Buddhist children's books that I have found so far. I read it for me and then I share it with my little one as he is able to understand. People of other faiths would appreciate it also.

Book Review: real books for children
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a thoughtfully written story that teaches real life lessons in a gentle way. Based on Buddist teachings and stories, the books central character (Stillwater, a giant panda) draws in even the youngest readers. Muth's other book The Three Questions does the same thing. How refreshing it is to read a childrens book that embraces some profundity and is not afraid to go deep into the well of CONCEPT.

Book Review: Wonderful and beautiful
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the best purchases I have ever made from Amazon. The book is one we give for birthday's all the time now. My 4 1/2 year old loves the book and my husband and I both enjoy reading it. The watercolor is beautiful and the storyline simple and compelling. The retelling of these old chinese stories is done in a wonderfully accessible way for both kids and adults. I strongly recommend it.

Book Review: thoughtful lessons
Summary: 5 Stars

Upon my children's request (4 year old twins) we have read this book before bed every night since they received it for their birthday. The drawings are lovely and just as much a part of the story as the sweet dialogue between Stillwater the giant panda and the 3 neighbor children to whom he tells the classicly Zen-like short stories.
There is a lesson or three in this book for most adults, too!

Book Review: grandfather's favorite
Summary: 5 Stars

from my first discovery of this beautiful book i have given a copy to each of my children for them to read to their children. whenever i am visiting, i ask if they can read it together with their grandfather. the book is always handy, a good sign. i know the children enjoy the art work and i expect them to realize an understanding of the lessons as they grow in conceptual ability. a treasure.
