Book Reviews of Zen Shorts (Caldecott Honor Book)

Book Review: Provoke Thinking!
Summary: 5 Stars

As powerful for adults as well as children, Zen Shorts is a wonderful book that promotes deep critical thinking and discussion on topics such as family relationships, friendships, respect, disrespect, gratitude, greed, giving, taking, selfishness, selflessness, material attachments, material detachment, actions and consequences, luck, communication, anger, and togetherness. It is the kind of book that should be read and discussed in reading circles or at family time or bed time. For students who are beginning to study concepts in Eastern philosophy, this little book is approachable and the intended wisdom within one's grasp.

My favorite story portion of the book is "Uncle Ry and the Moon." My favorite illustration is the ones that depict the panda and Addy painting and eating.

Book Review: Wonderfully written gem
Summary: 5 Stars

Run, don't walk to buy this book. I loved it and hope that it will inspire my children to be as thoughtful as Stillwater in considering all sides of every equation when dealing with people and relationships with others. It transcends age; I will give a copy to my sister for Christmas (she is 40). In fact, it was so wonderful that we will give it in lieu of a goody bag at my son's birthday party. The idea of Stillwater's Uncle Ry giving gifts to others on his birthday is such a cool way to show children to be generous and we wanted to incorporate that theme into my son's upcoming and future birthdays. We hope this will become a family tradition that will teach our children generosity and joy of life. Read this book. It will stay with you. It has lessons for you.

Book Review: Nothing short of Incredible....
Summary: 5 Stars

I have loved and collected good children's literature for over 50 years, and this is a book to cherish.
The beautiful illustrations, the floating panda and the title caught my eye on a hurried trip through the bookstore. After reading it while waiting on line, I had to dash back and pick up three more copies: one for each of my grown children, 26, 29 and 31 at the time.
The beautiful "lessons" of kindness and forgiveness are so lovingly taught here, and so very necessary in a world where peacefulness is only a word for so many children.
This was the first book that I read to my newborn grandson, and I plan to continue to share the joy of Zen Shorts. This is a treasure for all readers for all time.

Book Review: Not just for zen kids . . .
Summary: 5 Stars

This book presents lovely and entertaining retellings of three famous Buddhist stories in a way that makes them appropriate for children from about 3 up (and way beyond). Not just for zen kids, though--these are wonderful stories for kids (and parents) of any persuasion. The panda telling the very short stories to three neighbor children is neither condescending nor preachy, and Muth ably resists whacking you over the head with the morals--when kids get the point themselves (and even young readers will),the gentle teachings will be be more meaningful. Beautiful illustrations, too--this is one your kids will bring to you to "read it again."

Book Review: Lovely for All Ages
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this book purely because I loved the cover picture. Luckily for me, the text was just as appealing. My three year old daughter sits quietly through a reading; I just shorten the words. My eight and ten year old sons have sat through several readings. My 14 year old thumbed through it said "this is a cool book." The words speak to the heart. So no matter what your age is, you take something with you from the stories. It's a beautiful book and I recommend it for anyone. It's not your typical book which makes this a book you would treasure for ages. I know I plan to keep it around to read to my grandchildred one day :)
