Book Review: They will do fine. But taste in Medicine Balls depends on the individual.

I was looking specifically for small "Chinese Medicine Balls" when I first found and began using these "Zen edition" minatures. Thus I was particularly attracted to them, hoping that small meant easier to use. Not necessarily true. They are easier to keep apart when trying to do the exercises that encourage avoidance of the balls touching each other -- but the demand for fine motor dexterity can actually be more challenging when rotating them in the direction opposite from "natural" for each hand. They are very pleasant in sound and appearance. The carrying bag and attached book about meditation are a nice touch -- particularly for introducing them to a new user.
However, I am finding that the right "fit" in these balls depends a lot on the individual and whether they are trying to rehabilitate an injury, build fine motor coordination, feel some resistance, distract themselves during commericials or instead want to enter a chimeless SILENT void. So it has paid off to invest in a few different sizes, weights and types. I alternate between them depending on my need at the time.
These Zen Meditation Balls are among the most consistent about delivering "what you see is what you get" across shipments that I have found among Amazon's merchants. They've been helpful to me for fine motor control, dexterity, and for breaking hand and wrist cramps from either too much writing or typing. Some of our nurses also use them for similar reasons. Now a few of my patients have taken on the challenge to see whether regular use of medicine balls helps to improve blood flow to their hands, minimize morning stiffness, and diminish the unpleasantries of peripheral neuropathy. These might also be interesting for enhancing neuroplasticity in brain rehabilitation as well.
However, most of the other "medicine balls" which are unclassified or broadly classified as "small, medium and large" vary much too widely between merchants on Amazon, and one can't get a very good sense of where a given size fits within the overall range of them. A Google Search for baodingballs could yeild more information, comparisons and options to guide purchase selection when one returns here.
I personally started with small and lightweight (35 mm and under in size, hollow with chimes). However, now I find that I am likely to spend more time with the ones that are about 40-45 mm, and are a bit on the heavier side. For serious hand exercise and richer chiming tones I like the ones that are 50-52 mm. I also like using solid chrome steel balls at 40 mm -- 2 of these weigh about a pound, and in a few days I can notice improved strength in my hand and arms. Now I am hoping these really pay off during kayak season.
