Book Review: More than Your Money's Worth from Johnny Dollar

Johnny Dollar began his radio career as a slightly sleazy sleuth shamelessly padding his expense account as he reported on his solutions to the various mysteries he confronted as a freelance insurance investigator. From this humble beginning, he evolved into a standup guy with a strong moral compass.
Johnny Dollar was the best detective of the age of radio, and his popularity was evidenced by the fact that his was the last dramatic series to air on radio. Over the years many actors portrayed Johnny Dollar, but none as convincingly as Bob Bailey. The zenith of the Johnny Dollar era came when the show went to a serial format with five daily 15 minute installments. The serial format allowed for more complex plots, more character development, and an overall quality listening experience.
The ten programs in this collection come from that golden age of the Johnny Dollar series. Beginning with "The Crystal Lake Matter," where Johnny investigates the disappearance of an insured at a posh resort, to "The Primrose Matter," where Johnny confronts a gang of mad dog killers at a prospector's camp, the stories are engaging and entertaining.
Some of the other stories are as follows:
"Indestructible Mike" Johnny tries to save an insured derelict who proves hard to kill.
"Jolly Rogers Fraud" Johnny confronts an international gangster who seems to know every move Johnny makes before he makes it.
"Kallicles Matter" A financier disappears and neither his millionaire father nor his wife seem to be concerned.
"The Medium Well Done" An heiress is being bilked by a medium, and Johnny has to figure out how to expose the scam. This offering included some unintended humor, as the writers attempted to avoid a libel suit by inserting repeated disclaimers that there was such a thing as a legitimate psychic.
"The Laughing Matter" Johnny bodyguards a popular TV celebrity.
