Book Review: 99 Cents on the Dollar

Johnny Dollar began his radio career as a slightly sleazy sleuth shamelessly padding his expense account as he reported on his solutions to the various mysteries he confronted as a freelance insurance investigator. From this humble beginning, he evolved into a standup guy with a strong moral compass.
Johnny Dollar was the best detective of the age of radio, and his popularity was evidenced by the fact that his was the last dramatic series to air on radio. Over the years many actors portrayed Johnny Dollar, but none as convincingly as Bob Bailey. The zenith of the Johnny Dollar era came when the show went to a serial format with five daily 15 minute installments. Alas, although this collection stars Bob Bailey, it comes from the period when the show aired one 30 minute episode once weekly. Although the shows on this collection are not from the glory era of Johnny Dollar, they are still quite good, just not quite good enough for a full five stars.
The shows are as follows:
"Eleven O'Clock Matter" 01-19-58: Johnny bodyguards a heavily insured tycoon who has been receiving death threats.
"The Price of Fame Matter" with Vincent Price 02-02-58: A shameless promotional piece for Price, who also starred in a mystery series, "The Saint." Johnny is a puppet on Price's string as Price solves the mystery.
"Ghost to Ghost Matter" 05-18-58: Johnny and an old flame investigate the paranormal and eventually solve the transparent mystery.
"Midnight Sun Matter" 05-25-58: Johnny displays his virtuosity in the cockpit of a plane whose pilot has passed out.
"Fatal Filet Matter" 05-10-59: Johnny escapes death when his steak is overcooked, but he gets burned enough to track down a killer.
"The Empty Threat Matter" 11-27-60: Johnny takes another bodyguard job because it will take him to the South Pacific.
Summary of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar
Johnny Dollar, also known as "the man with the action-packed expense account," entertained audiences with his adventures as a freelance insurance investigator beginning in 1949. Now he may have tallied his last expense report for his listeners in 1962, but thanks to the help of Radio Spirits, Johnny Dollar is once again on the case. Traveling to exotic locales such as Tahiti and in The Price of Fame Matter, journeying to Paris where he's able to lend Vincent Price a helping hand.
