Book Review: Loved It!

James Cordier is tired of the spy life but has been commissioned for one final mission; retrieve highly sensitive letters from the most sought after courtesan in Regency Venice, Francesca Bonnard. Naturally, he is not the only one seeking the damaging letters. Francesca had fled England after an affair and divorce that ruined her in the eyes of the ton. Francesca's ex-husband, a notorious womanizer, had turned what friends she once had against her, this betrayal; among others has caused her to never put her trust in a man.
For James, what started out as a routine assignment turned into a spicy and sensual adventure when he began to lose his focus after realizing that Francesca was more a match for him than he'd bargained for. When a rather unhinged female adversary of Cordier's was also dispatched to retrieve the letters the plot thickened and James and Francesca's steamy dance of love needed to choreograph intricate steps to avoid the newest danger and attempts on both their lives.
*** One thing I've learned when approaching a long tedious air travel flight is picking up a book by a favorite author (Loretta Chase) to read and the time will fly; in this case YOUR SCANDALOUS WAYS! Yes folks, bottom line here is that super spy James Cordier and the wickedly scandalous Lady Francesca Bonnard surely made the most amusing traveling companions for this reviewer!
Ms. Chase did a remarkable job in portraying both the leads extremely well. One could feel the tiredness and repugnance James was feeling towards the work he'd been doing for the government. He was sick of the disguises and the entire undercover work, not that he wasn't good at it, but at this point he just wanted a normal life. Ms. Chase had James approaching Francesca as just another fallen woman who used her body for gain; but then during a weak moment he glimpsed the other side of her, the innocent side before men had betrayed her trust. That, combined with her exquisite beauty was the catalyst that had James losing his infamous control.
Francesca was fashioned splendidly with intelligence, a rapier sharp wit, and a brilliant foil to send James' infamous control completely into a tail spin. The dazzling dialogs between these two leads were totally engaging and their sensual appeal towards one another was definitely steamy. Chase used a cast of secondary characters that added just the right amount of amusement, danger and surprise making this a perfectly wonderful read which I highly recommend; whether going on a long plane ride or just for the fabulous entertainment of reading an extremely well-written and enjoyable romance.

James Cordier is all blue blood and entirely dangerous. He's a master of disguise, a brilliant thief, a first-class lover-all for King and Country-and, by gad, he's so weary of it. His last mission is to "acquire" a packet of incriminating letters from one notorious woman. Then he can return to London and meet sweet-natured heiresses-not adventuresses and fallen women.
Francesca Bonnard has weathered heartbreak, scorn, and scandal. She's independent, happy, and definitely fallen; and she's learned that "gentlemen" are more trouble than they're worth. She can also see that her wildly attractive new neighbor is bad news.
But as bad as James is, there are others far worse also searching for Francesca's letters. And suddenly nothing is simple-especially the nearly incendiary chemistry between the two most jaded, sinful souls in Europe. And just as suddenly, risking everything may be worth the prize.
