And Tokyopop, thankfully I thought (there was cheering and woo-hooing too when I heard!), picked this series back up again.
Finally, I thought. Finally I'll get to read all the volumes I own in Japanese in ENGLISH.
Don't get me wrong. This is not much more than an amusing gender-bender comedy. Enjoyable. Diversionary fluff. But I'd give it 4 of 5 stars except for the rather lack-luster translation Tokyopop does here. I have the old ADV volume that was released in English a few years back and the translation of this very same volume by ADV is infinitely better. Couldn't you hire their translator too, TP? *sigh* In ADV's version the satirically 'poetic' narrative intro to Momoi is just that. In Tokyopop's version you're left scratching your head over the opening pages rather awkward comparison of this girl to a flower in a seemingly random way.
Read ahead, translators. Read the WHOLE VOLUME first. (Better yet, read as many volumes of the series as you can get your hands on!) Absorb the story's tone, the nuance, the author's comedic timing. Then go back and start chewing on the transition to another language.
Please. Or better yet... have the editors read for content (and not just punctuation and maybe grammar) too.
Believe it or not, Tokyopop, the manga-reading audience IS getting that sophisticated. Step up.
