Book Reviews of Your Body Belongs to YouBook Review: Great book for preschoolers Summary: 4 Stars
I think every parent struggles with explaining appropriate vs inappropriate touching to preschoolers, and here is a short, simple book that does just that. It also has an introduction for parents and teachers that I personally found helpful. We have several of Ms. Spelman's books and I've found them to be a tremendous resource for explaining a variety of feelings - both good and bad - and teaching young children how to appropriately deal with those feelings. The one thing that bothered me about this particular book, however, is that it was written in the second person instead of first person like all the others. Perhaps there was a reason for this that is lost on me, but it seems to me that it would be more empowering to children to hear "my body belongs to me" rather than "your body belongs to you." Still, the book is excellent and age-appropriate for preschoolers and I definitely would recommend it to parents of young children.
Book Review: Great intro to tough subject for preschoolers Summary: 4 Stars
I have two girls (ages 4 and 2) and have been struggling with how to introduce the topic of inappropriate touching to them. This book made it much easier. It handles the subject matter-of-factly and with simple to understand terms. Children learn that it's OK if they don't want to be touched, that their private areas are those that are covered by a bathing suit, and that touching is never a secret. I think it's important to introduce this subject to children at a young age and this book allows you do so in a non-threatening, non-frightening way.
Book Review: Your Body Belongs to You Summary: 4 Stars
I was looking for a book to help me explain to my children ages 3 and 5 that their body is theirs and they are the only ones who can touch their private parts. Also, that they have the right to refuse any kind of touch that makes them uncomfortable and this book illustrated this concept very well.
Book Review: Just the Basics - good for preschoolers, school age may need more detail Summary: 4 Stars
This is a good book for introducing the idea to your children, especially young ones that need a simpler explanation. For a more detailed approach, for age 4 and up, I reccommend "The Right Touch." Overall, well done, and generic enough to use in a daycare or preschool classroom.
Book Review: Great Book Summary: 4 Stars
This is a wonderful book, especially for parents who are uncomfortable with things like this and don't know where to start. It's definately better read aloud with the child, at least the first time, so that they can ask questions.
