Book Review: Interesting tale of young Guinevere and beautifully illustrated

The Arthurian legend is well-known, but what is less familiar is the story of Queen Guinevere's early life, prior to becoming Arthur's Queen. In "Young Guinevere", author Robert San Souci has weaved a narrative of Guinevere's early days as a child and beautiful young woman based on classic and contemporary sources. The daughter of King Leodogran, Guinevere's name meant "white fairy", her skin being white and framed by auburn hair. Her future as Arthur's wife is foretold by an old crone, a seer who tells young Guinevere that the round table will be her dowry when "the greatest king of all comes to claim you as his bride." The story portrays Guinevere as strong-willed, brave, and impulsive, and this last trait is of particular interest when one notes how it comes to play in the Arthurian legend many years later.
In this book, the story ends with Guinevere riding off to be married to Arthur, accompanied by the great Merlin. The story and illustrations go well together and I think these stories will appeal particularly to children ages 8-12, and especially to those who love stories centered on the Arthurian legend and figures.
