Book Reviews of You Are Special (Max Lucado's Wemmicks)Book Review: Wonderful, wonderful book Summary: 5 Stars
Anyone who has ever read Max Lucado knows that he has a gift for storytelling. This is especially true in "You Are Special." In a world where all of the puppets go around giving each other stars (if they're impressed by you) or dots (if you aren't so impressive or make a mistake), one puppet stands out because of her lack of "marks," either good or bad. When asked about her secret, she refers one dejected puppet to his maker, who explains that all puppets are loved and important no matter what their "marks" and that the "marks only stick if you let them." This book is great for young kids and is useful whether or not the reader is religious. It is simple but teaches a very complex (and important) lesson.
Book Review: Uplifting! Summary: 5 Stars
There aren't many books that deliver a positive message to children - I love you no matter what, just because you're you, and it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks! It is never too early to teach this message to our children. If they do not hear positive and reinforcing words from their parents they will hear negative and degrading words from others. I took this book to work to show my coworkers after it was given to my daughter, and my supervisor said, with tears in her eyes, "any little girl who grows up hearing that message is going to do all right in this world." Buy this book for your child, your grandchild, read it to your Sunday School class, and often. The illustrations are also beautiful!
Book Review: Not just for children.... Summary: 5 Stars
This book is special. Lucado tells a wonderful story of the uniqueness of everyone in God's sight and to seek and trust the Lord for the meaning of life.
In fact, many scriptures resonate through the telling of this tale. We have used it in ministry to adults with often-dramatic results. I told the story of Punchinella to a group of 40 homeless men at a mission and to 60 or so women in prison. It preceded altar calls in both cases with many smiles, tears, and prayers.
I highly reccomend this book for adults and teenagers as well as children. The lessons learned by Punchinello are as relevent for old as for the young, and are eternal as well as entertaining.
Book Review: A Story for Everyone Everywhere Summary: 5 Stars
Meet Punchinello, the adorable Wemmick who comes to learn how precious he is to his Maker, regardless of what the other townspeople think of him. The unique storytelling of renowned author Max Lucado takes readers on a journey along with Punchinello as he struggles with the expectations others place on him, in a world focused on talents and abilities, flaws and failures. Then one day he bumps into Lucia, who manages to live without the responses of others affecting her at all! How does she do it? Punchinello is about to find out... With illustrations that capture the attention and imagination of children, YOU ARE SPECIAL will also speak to adults on a deeper level.
Book Review: This Book Will Make Your Heart Smile. Summary: 5 Stars
This book shows how true freedom for us comes by not being enslaved to the opinions of others. Max Lucado tells the story to communicate to children (and most DEFINITELY to adults as well) that by taking time to experience and remember God's love for us, we can have a deep joy that isn't contingent upon whether people bestow praise (represented by gold stars) or insults (grey dots) upon us. This is a book that I think everyone should read every morning before we start our day, because this simple story illustrates a truth that is essential to our peace, yet so hard for us to keep ahold of. Thank you Max, for reminding us of our infinite and unchanging worth.
