Book Reviews of You Are Special (Max Lucado's Wemmicks)

Book Review: A beautiful message for young and old, with sweet, simple delivery
Summary: 5 Stars

I received this on Christmas morning. I'd wanted it for quite some time, as an aspiring teacher and future parent, and thought it'd make a wonderful addition to my growing collection of children's books. I couldn't have been more right.

You Are Special is a sweet story about a doll maker whose wooden dolls take it upon themselves to dole out stickers to each other based on how they look, or their talents/lack thereof. What happens when one of the "gray dot" dolls meets a doll with NO stickers?

One of the deepest stories I've ever read, the message spans literature levels and ages, touching the hearts of both children and adults as the pages turn and the story unfolds. By the end, you realize what really makes one special, and it has nothing to do with stickers.

I cannot say enough about how beautiful this book is.

Book Review: Applies In So Many Ways
Summary: 5 Stars

I am not especially religious, and a recovering Catholic, so when my friend asked me to read this as a bedtime story to my godson (aged 3) and his older brother (6) I was skeptical. What a great story! I was quite literally moved to tears by the powerful message of love, equality in God's eyes and acceptance of others who are different.

As a gay man, with 5 nephews, 1 niece and 5 godchildren, books like this which reinforce messages of love and acceptance for children give me great hope, since children must be taught to hate or condemn. Mercifully, they can also be taught to love and accept God's work in all of us.

Without being heavy-handed or "preachy," this is a great book for parents who want to raise loving, open-minded children, regardless of denomination.

Book Review: Important Lesson About How Each is Created Special By God!
Summary: 5 Stars

I can't recommend this book highly enough. Even as an adult I find reading it thought provoking and encouraging. Max Lucado tells a moving story, vividly illustrated by Sergio Martinez, which teaches children how God has created each and every person uniquely, with value, worth and with significance, even though society sometimes may look down on what the world perceives as differences and "imperfections". It also teaches about how, even though the world may disapprove of us, God created and loves us just the way we are. A wonderful book for instilling "God esteem" into a child. Though beneficial for all children, particularly encouraging for a child who struggles with "being different" or "not fitting in". God bless you Mr. Lucado!

Book Review: A great reminder of whose opinion really matters!
Summary: 5 Stars

Max Lucado does a super job of reminding the reader of whose opinion really matters in this life. The Wemmicks just don't seem to know better. They go around deciding who's special and who's not by the clothes they wear or the words they speak or even if someone else thinks they're special. Fortunately for Punchinello, Lucia has already gotten to know her maker, the woodcarver Eli, and she knows the secret to happiness in life. Lucia points Punchinello in the right direction and in the process reminds the reader to not always be so caught up in what other's think but instead to think about what God thinks . . He created us . . It's His opinion that matters. Great book but not just for kids. Adults are really the ones it's written for, if you ask me!

Book Review: Wonderful Book
Summary: 5 Stars

I am writing this review in response to another review that stated that this was a book that made Christ's death on the cross a non-essential. I have always looked at this as a book to believers, a book that encourages young believers not to allow the world to taint them, but to continually go back to their Creator and Savior for their identity. I don't think that this book was meant for non-believers to develop a veiw of God, but for believers, young and old to be encouraged that the world does not determine our identity, God our Father does. If you read some of Max Lucado's other childrens book this underlying theme of God's children knowing and understanding who they are is evident. This is a wonderful book, something I think everychild should have!
