Book Reviews of You Are Special (Max Lucado's Wemmicks)

Book Review: For Ages 1 to 100: A Must Read
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a wonderful book for all ages. I became familiar with it when I bought it for a friend's daughter years ago, but the story touched my own heart in a profound way, and I have been giving it to children and adults ever since. There's a copy by my own nightstand as well which I refer to on occasion for encouragement. The premise is especially helpful for those who are of a sensitive nature and/or who have perhaps experienced rejection or found it hard to fit in among peers. The simple story is an excellent reminder of the One opinion of us that really matters: that of God. Amazingly enough, He made us all to be the unique person we are and is ready to accept us totally: A story of unconditional love and acceptance that we all need to be reminded of. Unlike the world, the Creator doesn't have standards of beauty, talent, wealth, or whatever that we must meet to be accepted and loved. He loves us because He made us...and He made us to be who we are. This book is a balm for the heart.

Book Review: A Profound Theological Text
Summary: 5 Stars

I think often times it is easy to get caught up in the complexities of life, and to forget the simple truths that are so important. Children's literature is focuses on teaching kids lessons they will need for healthy growth and success as they grow older, yet we forget that as adults we still need such lessons in our lives. You Are Special by Max Lucado, as my friend said to me once in reference to this book, is a "profound theological text" because it captures the essence of what it means to be God's children, loved and adored by their creator, and that the fickle appraisals of self-worth that others might place upon us only pale in comparison to God's affirming love for us. It is good to remind ourselves of this as adults, yet I truly believe that there is something about this lesson being written to children that makes it all the more insightful and meaningful to me, even as an adult. This is a priceless message for children and adults, and is very very well written.

Book Review: We are all special!
Summary: 5 Stars

We bought this book for the children who come to our center because they have been sexually abused. It is a wonderful book which helps these children understand that they are so very special and the abuse is just a small part of who they are. Most of the children we see think that others can tell that they were abused. Lucado wrote a story to help children believe in themselves and that it doesn't matter what others think. They realize that people cannot tell they have been abused. They also realize they are loved and wanted because Eli loves Punchinello as well as all of the other Wimmecks for who they are. This book is now read to those children who come for therapy to our center. It has also been "therapy" for the therapists and staff members who work at the center. I recommend that every household and every business which deals with children should own this book.

Book Review: Special Book
Summary: 5 Stars

I used to read this book to my campers when I was a counselor at a Christian summer camp. The message is that our creator, God, loves us for who we are - he made us who we are. Whenever we feel inadequate in this world, all we need to do is remember God's love for us. When we do that all those negative things that people see about us and even those that we have started to believe ourselves will disappear. This story is included in Lucado's book, The Book of Secrets. This excerpt from that book is enhanced by Martinez's wonderful illustrations.

Why 5 stars?: This book is wonderfully written and illustrated. The message is one that all children (and adults) need to remember. God is able to see past what others do. He looks not only at our surface, but what is inside. He made us the way we are for a reason and he loves us because we are all so different.

Book Review: Must Read
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an awesome book written by Max that is heart felting and reminds me that my imperfections are really God's prefect design for me. I currently own five of his books including "You Are Mine", "Because I Love You", "Just The Way You Are"(which made me cry!), "Tell Me The Story", and "Tell Me The Secrets". Yes, I am a big fan of his children's books and it all began with the first book of his I've ever read "You Are Special". I was touched ever since and it touched my students, my husband and every other person I'd share it with. The best part of owning these books is that I get to share them with everyone I know. As a teacher I enjoy reading these inspirational stories that share the messages of hope and love. Best of all, it really doesn't matter what religion, age, sex you are to enjoy these books. Once you get one, you'll probably want them all!
