Yeager: An Autobiography
His book starts with his early life in West Virginia where he learned many activities from his father, grandfather, and teachers that would be important throughout his lifetime. The book then picks up around 1940 when he became involved with military aircraft, with which he was involved until he retired after he became a one-star general and before he became a two-star general when he could no longer fly high-performance aircraft. He became the best pilot in the AF, ready for any eventuality with old or new aircraft. Their were many sections written by his superiors, friends and his wife. He knew many aircraft-oriented people including Bob Hoover, Pancho Barnes, and Jackie Cochran. Chuck and Glennis retired to Grass Vally, California. It took a while for Chuck to adapt but adapt he did.
Book Review: General and Sergeant Summary: 5 Stars
My carrier in the Air Force started as Engine Mechanic in early 1950. Then started flying in 1950 on c-54's, moved on to a new airplane, the Douglas Sky Master C-124 as a Flight Engineer and ended up with over 10,083 hours logged. Having read General Yeager's book, twice, I still enjoyed reading it again. You don't have to be cracy to fly, but it sure helps. At one time in Yuma,Arziona, with the help of a Pilot and an outside power unit, we started ALL 4 engines at the same time. Didn't have the nerve to do it again. Even climbed the propeler once to win a bet, didn't do that again either, my stomache like to have kill me. General Yeager, I salute you for a great book. Write another one so that I can relive some of your past as a Pilot
Book Review: Yeager Summary: 5 Stars
Having had the opprotunity to meet Chuck Yeager,To say the least, was a thrill for me. The experience prompted me to read his autobiography. I will say that it is far and away the best non fiction that I have read to date. Having had the opprotunity to meet this "Living Legend" a second time was an incredible feeling for me......after learning about how he had cheated death on many occasions and literally outran sound with a broom handle....you will have to read the book to find out what I talking about....Mr. Yeager is an American Hero in every sense of the word! I will sum this up in three words. READ THE BOOK!
Book Review: A straight shooting biography of several amazing lives. Summary: 5 Stars
Yeager personafied the WWII generation, the finest ever produced by America. His humble description of his amazing life is inspiring to all and incredible to those with a love of aviation. Besides his own history, he chronicles the life of several other people, such as lady pilots Pancho Barnes and Jackie Cochran, who also lived lives that read like movie scripts. A book that has to be read several times to be fully appreciated. Also check out "The First and the Last", by Adolf Galland, for an equally unusual true account by a great aviator and leader. Farron Dacus, Irving, Texas.
Book Review: A great story, told by a great story-teller Summary: 5 Stars
Chuck Yeager lived a life that many of us can only dream about. Regular country boy, to maintenance noncom, to fighter pilot, to war ace, to probably being the best test pilot ever known, unless you count Armstrong. Yeager was a great pilot, and he makes sure you realize that, but it is a fantastic story despite a bit of self-promoting. I picked up this book about 4 years ago and I've read it several times cover to cover. It is funny, interesting, and sensational, and a great piece of aviation-writing.
