Book Review: "With Gods Like These..."
Summary: 4 Stars
Dynamite Comics released new Xena stories in 2007 when they discovered that the show still had many fans. "Contest of Pantheons" has a war between the Greeks and the Egyptians over a stolen necklace. The bloodshed is so great that the gods of both civilizations come together to settle the feud once and for all: each pantheon must choose a group of mortal champions to fight to the death. The outcome: Xena, Gabrielle, Joxer and Autolycus vs. an Egyptian warrior and his apis comrades! But in the process one of the gods is plotting treachery.
The art of Xena: Contest of Pantheons has good art (the artists really capture the unique facial expressions of the characters) and is rather well written except for a turn in the plot that involves Xena and Autolycus entering the underworld, as well as Xena's debilitation of the treacherous god, in a way that I thought was rather unnecessary (I'm not going to give away too much of the story). But all in all it's still a fun comic to read and I'm glad I have in my possesion another piece of merchandise from a franchise that's becoming all too forgotten. Battle on Xena!
