Book Reviews of World Without EndBook Review: Great sequel Summary: 5 Stars
Great follow up to pillars of the Earth.Very well written with no slow spots, which is amazing considering the book is over 1,000 pages. Not quite as compelling as P O T Earth but excellent nonetheless. Amazing attention to historical detail, especially the way medevial buildings were constructed.
I wouldn't say the characters were as well developed as they were in pillars and the line between good guy and bad was more nebulous but perhaps more realistic.
The ending seemed a little rushed. Maybe at page 950 with no real end in sight Follet was compelled to wrap it up.
Overall an excellent read.
In my top 10 all time with Pillars.
Book Review: riveting the whole way through Summary: 5 Stars
"World Without End" is the first book I've read, maybe since my teens, that I stayed up all night to finish. It took me 3 days to get through the first 500 pages and by then I was obsessed with Mr. Follett's depiction of 14th century England, his incisive characterisation, the heartbreaking twists and turns of plot, the intimate interplays of church and guild and family and love and industry. I finished the last 500 pages in one thrilling night long rush, mostly because I had fallen in love with the people (which is perhaps the most important thing in a book). How deeply and compassionately Mr. Follett knows the human condition.
Book Review: 1100 great pages Summary: 5 Stars
I don't care about a little mistake like what they called the Plague during that time period, I care about a great, entertaining story. If I wanted a history lesson, I'd read nonfiction. I love the way this guy writes. He doesn't waste time and pages and gets right to the good stuff. I enjoyed the exaggerated characters like Godwyn and Philemon. I enjoyed the fact that Caris was a bit of a ball buster. The story was great and the sex fit in well. I loved P of E and wasn't sure I could like a guy who wasn't Jack Builder but learned to love Merthin. You can also be thankful that medical research has come so far since then.
Book Review: Two Years Later - Enjoyed it more. Epic novel Summary: 5 Stars
==== Reading it again 2 years later:
The great team of character-types from Pillars of the Earth jump out of the pages again. A great story can always be told again and again. This time Ken Follett tells this classic story with even better plot twists and characterization. I thoroughly enjoyed reliving the great moments in this book as I reread it.
==== Original comments:
I LOVED Pillars of the Earth and World Without End is right up there as another classic book in the English Language. I just finished reading Chapter 42 (Witch trial of Caris) and that sums up how great a writer Ken Follett has become.
Book Review: WOW Summary: 5 Stars
WOW! A huge, monstrous, sprawling saga of a tale. . .full of almost every literary theme known to man. This is a type of book (along with it's wonderful predecessor, Pillars of the Earth) that captivatesyour attention and holds it until page 1114. It reads so quickly, as there are many great stories in it, and you'll be finished before knowing it, wishing that this world had no end.
I loved this book, and will reccomend it to anyone interested in reading a story about humble beginnings, and the historical genre.
This book also points out the greatest theme of karma, how hard work can pay off, A++++++
