Book Review: Really, really good.
Summary: 5 Stars
I just finished reading this. It is a pretty amazing woodworking book.
The book starts with a history lesson, then explains the different reasons for design decisions and their advantages and disadvantages.
Then it has a constructive critique of several types of benches, and then settles on two of the types discussed earlier in the book.
And lastly it has detailed instructions on how to build two of them, with the "Modern Roubo" he considers the best design for most woodworkers.
What should have been a dry subject I found really, really interesting. I have about 100 books on woodworking, and from the perspective of just reading a book, this one is easily the best.
A couple of notes for people:
The Roubo is for "serious" woodworkers. If you are just getting started and need your first workbench, search for the "$175 Workbench", it is discussed in this book, but you might not know what kind of woodworker you are, probably until you have built the $175 workbench. I would not want to tackle one of these until I built the $175 bench. Here is a model built in google sketchup [...]
Chris Schwartz has updated some of his thoughts on the Roubo in his blog since he has now had a couple of years to work on it. You may want to look at that before building one of these. If I remember correctly, he says he would have made it 24" deep, and probably a slanted leg, instead of straight.
