Book Review: Phenomenal work from Nelson DeMille!
Summary: 5 Stars
After I read Nelson DeMille's 1981 novel Cathedral, I became hooked. I quickly became a fan of Nelson DeMille. So it's not very surprising to know that I also enjoyed reading Word of Honor. This isn't your usual action-packed political thriller. This is actually what you would call "human drama." This is a drama that deals strictly with character development, dialogue, and the terrifying reality of the Vietnam War. Benjamin Tyson is a successful corporate man and a Vietnam veteran. He is also a family man and a popular among the public. His biggest flaw, however, dates back to February 15, 1968, when he and his combatants have done something completely atrocious. Now the secret is out, and Tyson is in the midst of media attention and a court-martial. That's the basic storyline, but it's the way the author writes it that makes it appealing. The flow of the novel is just right, while the tension remarkably works on almost every level. There are some instances of black humor that are just right in some scenes. The narratives and flashback sequences on the Vietnam war are powerful and yet a bit painful to read through because of the horrifically graphic content. The characters are interesting and most of them are quite 3-dimensional (I can't help but imagine Al Pacino as Corva). But I think the most intriguing part of Word of Honor is Tyson himself. He is a flawed protagonist, and you can't really tell if you love him or hate him until the climax. There is so much information about him and his men during that notorious day of February, that you'll never know what to expect at the end.
Long story short, I would recommend Word of Honor to anyone who is interested in some political drama. But be warned, because this isn't for those who have a weak stomach.
