Book Reviews of Woman on the Edge of TimeBook Review: Woman on the Edge of Time Review--------Julie Lewis Summary: 5 Stars
Woman on the Edge of Time for me is a very interesting book. This book took many unexpected and anticipated twists and turns that helped to grab and keep my attention. Marge Piercy did a fabulous job constructing this story of a woman who has been a terrible victim of many crimes. Connie Ramos is the main character in this book and she has many unresolved issues in her life. Right off the start Marge Piercy opens us up to some of these issues that Connie has had to experience in her life. In Chapter One we realize that one of the most important things in Connie's life is her family. Her niece Dolly is about the only family that she has left due to other circumstances. In this chapter you learn that Dolly is very manipulative and almost seems to be starved for attention. Dolly lives in a world of lust and money and she turns to Connie for help when she realizes that she has become pregnant. In this chapter we learn that Connie's own child was taken out of her home due to abuse and we also learn that Connie has someone else in her life that was with her before Dolly came knocking. In trying to help her niece Connie lands herself in a hospital for the mentally ill. The living environment and the staff at Rockover are absolutely horrible and truly makes you feel very sorry for Connie. In the beginning of the book it is easy to make the misconception that Connie is a very weak minded woman, she has lost the love of her life to an illness placed within him and she lost her daughter to the State because of abuse, she also has just lost any trust she ever had for her niece Dolly. While in Rockover we learn of a person named Luciente. Luciente also plays a great role in this book. We learn that Luciente is from the future but we are not sure why she is visiting Connie if at all. It tends to be really easy in this book to draw the conclusion that Connie is mad. It is easy for us to believe that she is not in a parallel universe but that she is hallucinating to escape from the situations that currently trouble her. Reading further into this book you start to realize certain things, you start to realize that Connie may not be as mad as we have thought and most importantly we learn that Connie is not as weak minded as we imagined. Luciente comes to Connie many times in this book, I believe that Connie spent more time with Luciente in her village then she did in her own time. Luciente's world is almost serene; this makes the book interesting because everyone in Luciente's world is equal. There are no stereotypes like in our world and Connie's world, in Luciente's world everyone has their own place and they have their own job to do and it is almost described in such a way that would make you want to live there. In my opinion this book opens up the mind to many different ways of living, I believe that there could be a place like Luciente's and I believe that eventually someday that we might be able to travel to places such as these. Throughout this story we learn that there are going to be many other torments that Connie will have to endure. While at Rockover the staff made many decisions that would influence Connie's life in a detrimental manner. The doctors have decided that Connie is violent and delusional and they are transferring her to another hospital called Bellvue. While at Bellvue Connie seems to be able to make a couple of close friends in her own world. At Bellvue the doctors have experimentations that they perform on the patients that with an open mind is very interesting to read about. While at Bellvue Connie has many more visits with Luciente; I believe that these visits she is having with Luciente are not to benefit Luciente's world like she had once thought but to benefit herself. I strongly think that through visiting Luciente this made Connie a stronger person who is starting to realize that she has control over her own actions and has control over the things that are happening to her. As Connie watches many of the friends that she has made go in one after one for the operation that cuts into their heads Connie comes to the conclusion that she will not stand for them to get by with it on her. After time the surgery is done on Connie but something has changed in Connie and she is not susceptible to the implant they put in her. While visiting Luciente off and on after the surgery the doctors realize that something is wrong because while she is away the staff is not able to awaken her. While in the last few chapters of this book we start to realize that Connie has found a way to fight the system. We learn that Connie is a very strong minded person who will eventually make a life altering decision for many people and stick up for herself and others in a tragic but not so tragic way. In the conclusion of this book Marge Piercy leaves you questioning many things. Is Connie a murderer for the stand that she took and what ultimately happens to her afterwards? All in all I would recommend this book to any educated reader with an open mind. Marge Piercy does an excellent job throughout the entire story with detail done by obvious research we learn of in her acknowledgements. This is a highly moving story of basically a Woman on the Edge of Time and should be picked off the shelf and on a waiting list to read.
Summary of Woman on the Edge of TimeConnie Ramos, a woman in her mid-thirties, has been declared insane. But Connie is overwhelmingly sane, merely tuned to the future, and able to communicate with the year 2137. As her doctors persuade her to agree to an operation, Connie struggles to force herself to listen to the future and its lessons for today....
