William Eggleston is a genius.
The photographs are mostly of people and places in and around Memphis, taken between the early 1970's and 2001 or so. These are images that offer the viewer everything and nothing: Eggleston's photos are never answers to obvious questions, nor are they social or political commentary. They're art. This box of seemingly off-the-cuff casual images is actually a collection of carefully framed and formal portraits. Eggleston's landscapes are lonely ones, suggestive of decay, but his pictures aren't depressing. They throb with an edgy, insistent life even as they portray a world fast moving past whatever he is capturing with his lens. His pictures are witty, even funny sometimes, but never at the expense of his subject. After looking at Eggleston's photographs, you don't see the world quite the same way, which is what makes him a genius. The images in this box include:
the flat facade of a suburban tract house seen through the looming off-kilter frame of a tricycle;
the inside of a small old-fashioned freezer filled with frost-furred boxes of pot pies and cartons of "ice milk";
a doll party on the giant hood of a Cadillac;
a beautiful young woman in profile, standing at an outdoor burger counter, dollar bill clutched in her hand
and 21 others...
The cards themselves are on heavy stock, much heavier than typical postcard stock, so they're a pleasure to shuffle through and hold in your hand. The prints seem to be pretty good (though I have not seen any of these photographs reproduced before, so I don't have anything to compare them to). His photographs lend themselves to this format--it's a pleasure to take them out one by one, juxtapose them in different combinations, interact with them in a way you couldn't if they were in a book.
