Book Review: Thelen's journal - humorous albiet gritty

Thelen's account offers a gritty and oftentimes humorous narrative of the experiences of an Army law officer sent into the mass chaos of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Thelen spares no detail in delivering the raw imagery of life in a combat zone, carrying out the special missions of an international law officer.
The everyday mundane struggles leave those of us stateside both unnerved and thankful for the sacrifices of our American servicemen, while the commitment to the larger goals of reconstructing a third-world society brings an even greater appreciation to such sacrifices.
At some point during his tour, you begin to assure yourself that the living and working conditions could not possibly get anymore hectic or disparaging, only to learn of the next account of bureaucracy or fate's cruel hand of sick humor bearing down another insatiable situation onto our protagonist. You find yourself thinking, "Could I handle this condition or situation without losing my mind?" Thank God for our servicemen and women, and for their missions and commitments to the common goal.
This is a great read about not only life in a modern combat zone in general, but the experiences of a professional serving during a historic time in our modern history during this latest conflict which draws so much emotion and recourse from all contemporary American citizens.

Wildcat Juliet: On the Ground in Sadr City is a compilation of letters and journal entries written by a military officer during the first year of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Captain Jason Thelen, an Army JAG officer, was deployed to Iraq with a civil affairs unit to assist in the rebuilding of the Iraqi infrastructure and government. Wildcat Juliet captures the rigors and dangers of life as a civil affairs soldier in Iraq, including IEDs, snipers, corrupt officials, and daily inspections of sewage pumping stations.Military Books
