Book Review: I know why

Like George, I was raised without my father in my life. I am also Mexican-American, raised by a single mother living in my grandmother's home for most of my childhood years. My no-nonsense grandmother was tough and unaccustomed to showing affection, so tears were something she regarded with scorn. I was a huge Freddie Prinze fan and never missed an episode of "Chico and the Man" and would spend hours listening to his comedy album, "Looking Good". When Freddie died, I hid in my closet to cry. There would be no comfort from my mother or grandmother, only scorn and ridicule for shedding tears at all, much less for someone I didn't know. So I know why George cried; I totally identified with his story - especially when he told of things like getting tickets to a live taping of Chico and the Man or going on the rare outing to an amusement park. If you grew up in the 70s like I did, were raised by a single parent or grandparents, you will feel like George is telling your story.
