Book Reviews of Where the Wild Things AreBook Review: A TIMELESS CLASSIC! MY CHILDHOOD WOULD NEVER BE THE SAME! Summary: 5 Stars
I was born in 1962 the year before this book was first published. The book was read to me many times by my dear Mother who passed away March 1st 2009.
The book is wonderfully illustrated and has very few words, but I think that is what is so special about this imaginative story. It leaves so much room for your imagination and it never grows old. I can remember my Mother using different voices for each character in the book when she would read it to me and when I got a bit older I read the book over and over again.
Nothing will fill the emptiness in my heart, soul and body caused by my Mother's passing, but looking back on these cherished memories makes it easier and bearable. I was lucky to share many years with her and I never took her for granted.
I love and miss you Mom!
I wasn't aware that this book was even in print until reading an Amazon friend's review for it. Thanks Andrew!
This book is something every parent should share with their child or children. It will help them explore their imagination and they will know they are loved! What more could you want from a children's book?
Book Review: Artist Review Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the only books I remember from my childhood. Instead of your typical cutesy little kid story, you have something with real imagination and fun. It's an original story line with very unique illustrations. I know many adult artists who still love this book for its artwork.
I used to spend hours studying these illustrations as a child and now I'm a successful artist and I still love them. The point of these illustrations, or rather, any illustration is to supplement imagination, not create it. When I was a child these gorgeous artistic illustrations were far more interesting to me than the typical disney style. Even as a kid I could appreciate this book for its originality. Then again, I had imagination of my own, and was able to bring these creatures to life. Kids today have video games to do that for them.
I think people who rate this book as poor just can't see the value in it as art. This is a complete artistic vision executed as both literature and visual art. I can't see how anyone couldn't like this book unless they have absolutely no imagination, or if they have no appreciation for art whatsoever.
Book Review: Wild things... Summary: 5 Stars
Our nine-month-old has been read to ever since he was three months. We have just "re-discovered" Where The Wild Things Are, and enjoy it immensely.
It reminds me of my own childhood, similar to countless other previous reviewers. For myself, however, it wasn't a book we actually had around the house. Doubtlessly I remember it from a public library reading or elsewhere.
The pictures are so intricate and the colours are vibrant, but yet subdued. When we reach the three pages of the "rumpus" (in which there are no words, only pictures), I like to leave it that way, and not comment on the scenery to the child, but just turn the pages very slowly in silence, watching him gaze at the pictures.
This book enjoys ongoing popularity. Recently it's been reviewed on Amazon every couple of days! Little wonder, as it is a joy and an inspiration to young and old (and in between) alike.
Another favourite of ours you may like to try is The Monster at the End of this Book Starring Lovable, Furry Old Grover (ISBN: 0-307-16025-4). It is (backcover) "...the bestselling Sesame Street book of all time..."
Book Review: Roar! Summary: 5 Stars
The night Max wore his wolf suit and made mischief of one kind..and anotherSo starts one of the most perfect and wonderful illustrated children's books of all time. Max like many children has been engaged in a bit of mischief and is sent to bed without supper. While in his room he imagines an imaginary place where the "beasts" are wild and he is ruler. Max learns that this is not the kind of place he wants to live and even though he has made mischief, he is still loved by his parents. Both are important lessons for a child. As a preschool teacher, I have read this book countless times to many children and can attest to its appeal. The children are delighted to roll their eyes, show their claws and roar their roars along with the wild things when the wild rumpus starts. For new parents this is one book I would say to include in your child's library. I'm sure that you will read it enough times to memorize it. Maurice Sendak's Where The Wild Things Are was first published in 1963 so stands the test of time having served generations of children. The story and illustrations are as appealing today as they were nearly 40 years ago.
Book Review: Still one of the best Summary: 5 Stars
My mother purchased this book for me when I was little along with Harry the Dirty Dog and The Happy Egg I fell in love with them both. Well I have moved several times over the years and managed to damage several books including the ones listed. Well lets just say that I enjoyed these books enough to search many book stores and online auctions to replace them because the stores are timeless. I really enjoy Where the Wild Things Are because when I was younger I was afraid of monsters and things that were hidden in the shawdows and this book lets you know that there is a bit of the monster in us all and that there is no reason to be afraid. I also like the fact that the book shows that when a parent punishes a child it does not mean that there is a loss of love. I recommend this book to anyone with or without kids and if you like this the other two listed may also be something you will like. And if you can find a copy of the Happy Egg anywhere grab it along with Happiness Is a Warm Puppy another one of my favorites. Thanks for reading this and I hope it was helpful. Also who needs Harry Potter when you have such classics.
