Book Reviews of Where the Red Fern Grows

Book Review: Madison's Magnivicent Review
Summary: 5 Stars

Do you love books that fear and adventure strike? Spoiled 15 year old Megan Maxwell, the main character, her family, her maid, and the rest of her town, who live in a Pennsylvania river valley in 1889, are discovering water seeping into their carpet; it's a race against time to make it to the hill where it is dry. As the father came home, he was rushing everyone to Green Hill, but Aunt Ella is denying to go the hill. She took the maid, Megan, and little Tim to the attic; when the father returned to get everyone, the water was nearly touching his armpits and just then the terrible wave strikes. The force of the water pushed Megan outside where she landed on a mattress and she's floating. Suddenly a group of people floated by to help but failed; she passed a family she knew and a man on top of a house, but they did not help her as she floated by in debris filled water. Megan is still floating on a mattress when a man gets on her mattress, and they keep floating. They got on a wagon that is floating with 3 other people, and they're heading for a hill. As Megan and the four other people were floating on the wagon, they hear people crying out for help. "Could you help us!" they cried. They got on the wagon, and saw a log across a creek They crossed the log and finally made it to dray land. Two young men headed up the mountain and got help, but they found a little boy stuck on a rock. A nice warmhearted lady let them sleep in a shed, and she brought them some food. Megan fed the little boy. Brian was asking Megan questions about her family, because Brian and another man were going off to find Megan's family. As Brian himself, returned back, Megan questioned Brian about himself, and he told her about himself; right then he said, "I'm glad I met you." Megan wants to go to find her family, but the little boy wants to go with Megan because he is attached to her. As they looked outside, they saw all the houses were rubbish. Brian, Tom, and a few other men made a hand the crew are walking in deep mud and they climbed over a house. Megan found her dog, so maybe Aunt Ella and Timothy are near. As they were trudging along, they ran into someone Megan knew; he showed Megan, Daisy, and Stefan to a dry room in the school to rest. The man Megan knew gave all of the men that were in the building an assignment; Brian brought Megan, Stefan, and Daisy back to the little shed. Megan, Daisy, and Brian went to the train yard, and Daisy left. Megan ran into Hulda, the cook. Now they're off to find Megan's family. Brian set off to find his mom and dad, and when he returned he looked at them and said, "My parents are dead." Will Megan be rejoined with her family after this long journey? Cross your fingers and hope that Megan finds her family alive. I recommend you read this book to see what happens. My teacher and I read the book. We loved it!

Summary of Where the Red Fern Grows

Billy, Old Dan and Little Ann -- a Boy and His Two Dogs...

A loving threesome, they ranged the dark hills and river bottoms of Cherokee country. Old Dan had the brawn, Little Ann had the brains -- and Billy had the will to train them to be the finest hunting team in the valley. Glory and victory were coming to them, but sadness waited too. And close by was the strange and wonderful power that's only found...

An exciting tale of love and adventure you'll never forget.

From the Paperback edition.
Author Wilson Rawls spent his boyhood much like the character of this book, Billy Colman, roaming the Ozarks of northeastern Oklahoma with his bluetick hound. A straightforward, shoot-from-the-hip storyteller with a searingly honest voice, Rawls is well-loved for this powerful 1961 classic and the award-winning novel Summer of the Monkeys. In Where the Red Fern Grows, Billy and his precious coonhound pups romp relentlessly through the Ozarks, trying to "tree" the elusive raccoon. In time, the inseparable trio wins the coveted gold cup in the annual coon-hunt contest, captures the wily ghost coon, and bravely fights with a mountain lion. When the victory over the mountain lion turns to tragedy, Billy grieves, but learns the beautiful old Native American legend of the sacred red fern that grows over the graves of his dogs. This unforgettable classic belongs on every child's bookshelf. (Ages 9 and up)
