Bestselling author Wilbur Smith apparently has been around about as long as dirt, but I just learned about him at a bookstore in Cape Town when I asked the clerk to recommend a piece of South African literature. First she showed me the obligatory stuff: the sort of precious obscure left wing crap that gets writers nominations for the Booker Prize. I said I was looking for a plot writer. She pointed to the Wilbur Smith novels. This novel, the first in "The Courtneys" series starts in about 1870 and ends just before the Boer war. Wonderful narrative space full of Zulu battles, a leopard attack, life on the ranch, life in the gold mine in the village of Johannesburg, life in a covered wagon with a man seeking his fortune in the ivory trade. Romance, money, fights, deaths, animals. Great stuff.
