Book Reviews of When You Are Engulfed in Flames

Book Review: A Fan
Summary: 5 Stars

I have read all of David Sedaris' books and love them all. I really enjoyed Engulfed in Flames, but it didn't result in as many laugh out loud moments as have occurred from past books. While I always love the belly laughs, this book contains plenty of great material and is, at times, highly contemplative.

I am about the same age as Sedaris and have always enjoyed reading about his childhood, as I can relate. This makes reading all of his book especially enjoyable.

Sedaris does a wonderful job--as always--at telling stories. He is a master at descriptions and timing.

Book Review: Very funny and insightful...
Summary: 5 Stars

I first heard about this book on The Daily Show (love it) and heard him tell the story about how the book got to have its title. That was enough to propel me to look into the book. WHAT A FUNNY, ENTERTAINING and INSIGHTFUL book this is. I sat in my chair laughing out loud. His writing style is a bit reminiscent of how a comedian does his standup. With witty style, he describes the most hilarious moments that most might overlook and spins it in a way that can really make you think. He has a wonderful way of writing about our world and the quirkiness that might not be evident to all of us.

Book Review: When You Are Engulfed in Flames, may as well read this book
Summary: 5 Stars

I have always liked David Sedaris. Knowing what is voice sounds like (from books on tape and National Public Radio) gives his prose an added fillip, since it's nice to hear his voice in your head as you're reading. It's not "It's A Wonderful Life" that puts me in the Christmas spirit, but rather hearing "Santa Land Diaries." Like Garrison Kiellor, Sedaris draws you into the time and place, makes you care about the characters, and makes you laugh and look back on the stories later an smile. After reading his latest book, I'll never look at men wearing bow ties the same way again.

Book Review: As good as ever
Summary: 5 Stars

I always worry that David Sedaris is going to run out of great stories, but by some miracle, he doesn't. I'm listening to this book (got it at audible.com) on my ipod while walking in the morning. I must look like an idiot grinning and laughing every block or two. I do recommend the audio version--Sedaris has a great, comedic voice. You'll enjoy the fact that Sedaris lets us in on the plain realities of his life (going to Princeton, his relationship with Hugh, etc.) a bit more than in earlier collections. Don't know what's bugging other reviewers. I give the book at A+.

Book Review: Heartwarming, funny and sometime wince-worthy
Summary: 5 Stars

I hadn't read any of David Sedaris' essays or books before so this was my introduction to the author and I was glad to meet him.

His essays are vignettes from his past that had me laughing, sighing wistfully and sometimes feeling a bit embarrassed for him but in a good way. His brutal honesty about himself, his family and friends was so much fun to read and his wit is as brutal as his honesty at times but always left me laughing.

His modesty, sense of humor, insight and writing talent led me straight back here to order another of his collections.
