It should be a viewed as a bible by all women, passed down from grandmother to mother to daughter to granddaughter. It is the truth about women. The real truth. It is documented and researched with biographies and references right in the book. Each fact can be looked up. Every women on the face of this earth should read this book. I am giving this book to each of my daughters and my granddaughter for Christmas presents. I could not give them a greater gift. Merlin Stone is wonderful, she will answer every question that has been left in the dark far too long. If you are a woman, you owe it to yourself to know the truth. For the truth will set you free. Simply outstanding. This is a fascinating and careful look at civilizations and beliefs that existed prior to the Adam and Eve creation myth and how that myth has been used in the most damaging and brutal hegemony of all time. Readers may find themselves angry at times -- if the reader is fearful and closed minded, it may be too challenging. If the reader approaches with a peaceful, open, and critical mind, he or she may feel strong emotions about the systematic deception and destruction detailed in this wonderful book. The first two thirds carefully lay the groundwork and evidence for the last third, which will rock your world. One of the most eye-opening books I have read in my life... Some men may feel intimidated by the information and this is endlessly sad because women are first of all mothers who love their children, boys and girls equally... Therefore, if the society went back to being matriarchal men would benefit from it first of all. No matter what, deep inside mothers just want their children of both genders to be happy and despite the terrible brainwashing coming from "traditional" religions against female's intellectual capacity they instinctively know how to heal the wounds and ensure that happiness. I consider myself well-informed on history, but I learned a lot from this book. The book's thesis is that patriarchal societies conquered and destroyed the original idea of the Goddess (known by various names, e.g. Isis, in different cultures.) Stone argues that before the Indo-European invasions of approximately 2000 B.C., women were held in high regard throughout the world. Stone also contends that the Book of Genesis was not just a creation myth-it was an attempt to portray women as inferior to men by the will of God himself. Stone makes a great argument and I highly recommend this book to any history enthusiast.Book Review: All I can say is.. Wow!

You need to read this book to know how I felt while reading it. I can't even explain the sadness, the horror, the anger I felt. All beacuse a few tribes of men decided they wanted their patrilineal system to take over. I wish there were some way to reverse the damage, take back our matrilineal rights (and rites). But that would mean that every woman would need to read this book, and agree with it, and make her own decision to take it all back. It hurts to read this and realize what there was before, what we are missing now, what they did to us in the name of their god.
