Book Reviews of "What's Happening to Me?" A Guide to Puberty

Book Review: Great Book
Summary: 5 Stars

I read this book to my son about 5 years ago. I thought it was important that he understood both the male and female side of puberty. I wasn't sure how much he took in until a year later when his class had to discuss puberty in health class. The teacher told me that he was the only one who knew all the answers!
Since then, I have read this book to some of my foster children. For some of them, it really helped alliviate some of their anxiety about puberty and sex in general.
I loaned this book to a coworker who never returned it so I am buying it again!
In my opinion, this book is a must have!

Book Review: Speaking as the young reader
Summary: 5 Stars

My mother got me this book as well as "Where did I come from"?

I looked these up because I now have a daughter.
I have such fond memories of these two books. I read them over and over and I probably started reading them from the time I could read.
For me they were not too graphic. They explained things that I wanted to know and that my parents could not explain.

I love the illustrations. I have such love for this book. I write my review as a person remembering how I felt as the child reader and not as the parent judging.

Book Review: A Great Guide To Those Painful Times!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great book about puberty which is perfect for showing to your child. I will do it when I have some. It goes into good detail and doesn't talk any nonsense. It's very upfront. I mean, it's not like "Oh, your period feels good." It talks about how women might get depressed or groggy, which I think is important for them to know. it talks about erections, masturbation, periods, and even curcumcism (sp?). It also talks about wet dreams and the feelings you may get towards other girls. A great and useful guide.

Book Review: My First Memory of Puberty
Summary: 5 Stars

I can still remember my own mother using this book to guide me through "the talk" about puberty. The images are still the same and I find my own children giggling just as I did at the boy who has something "unwanted" happen on the diving board. This book is a good way to add a bit of levity to a scary subject, and is a great accompaniment to "A Chicken's Guide to Talking Turkey with your Kids about Sex" from Leman. Read it to your child and censor what you deem necessary depending on their age, maturity and experiences.

Book Review: An adult who read this as a child
Summary: 5 Stars

I was probably 8 or 9 when my mom bought this book for me. I remember reading it many, many times, both before & during puberty. In the years since then I've thought back and been glad that I had this book at my fingertips to answer questions I was too embarrassed to ask my mom.

If I ever have children this will be the first book I go looking for to help open the discussion with my kids about puberty and give them solid, non-judgmental, factual information about their bodies through the adolescent years.
