Book Review: GPS For Kindergarteners

This book is well designed for the young reader. Colors are bright and vibrant to attract young eyes and the simple, uncomplicated watercolor graphics could have been crafted by a talented, precocious child. The book's pages are glossy stock, heavy and easy to turn for young fingers.
Rockwell uses appropriate language on a level her intended audience can understand. Text appears on every other page and is minimal so as not to overwhelm the prospective kindergartner. The book's effectiveness doesn't suffer with the lack of rhyme or repetition.
This is a book that lends itself to interactive reading of parent and child. The pictures support the text so well that a nonreader can benefit by revisiting those full page graphics depicting the routine kindergarten activities.
When I taught for the public school system we always had an orientation for the incoming students. Elementary students visited my room for a period. I talked to them about middle school, answered questions, and took them on a brief tour of the building. The following September many of them would seek me out referencing that day. During one orientation, a student asked if I was that teacher who liked potatoes. Apparently my reputation had preceded me. These planned visits dispelled misgivings, calmed fears, and gave reassurance to the wide eyed visitors. Fortunately or unfortunately the apprehensive feelings and shy demeanors quickly gave way to security and relaxation.
Welcome to Kindergarten is a wonderful book to share with a prospective kindergartner. Reading it may go a long way in making that first day one to anticipate, not dread.

Join Tim as he visits his future kindergarten classroom and learns what he will be doing during his first year of school. Explore the reading, math, and art centers. Sit at the desk where he will practice writing, counting, and telling time. The classroom may look a little too big at first, but after finding out about all the fun ahead, it doesn't seem too big at all. In fact, it's just the right size.
