Book Review: Great for a birthday cake

I wanted to make a cake for my boyfriend's birthday. Although I used to bake all the time, it had been about six years since I'd made a cake and I felt like I was starting all over again. In preparation, I bought about ten books on cake making and decorating. Many of them had very beautiful, breathtaking designs but, to my surprise, this is the one I ended up using exclusively to make my cake.
This book has so many great details concerning everything you need to know to make a frosted and decorated cake. Yes, I was making a birthday cake and not a wedding cake, but I still want to know about crumb coats and detailed instructions for torting the cake. My favorite instructions were for the meringue buttercream frosting. It tells you exactly what to do, including what to do if things aren't going quite right and how to time your boiled sugar with your eggwhites. For a minute I thought I had ruined a rather large batch of the stuff, but her tip to put your bowl inside a larger bowl filled with ice water turned it into the beautiful, silky thing it was meant to be. My bf loved the chocolate buttercream and said it was even better the next day.
I made the Nutella Cake, but I filled it with more buttercream instead of Nutella. It would be easy to make a birthday sized cake from any one of these cakes, since instructions and amounts are included for cake layers from six inches up to fourteen. I can't wait for someone else to have a birthday so I can try something else.
The cakes in here are not that complicated, and I don't think I would use them for a wedding cake because I think wedding cakes should be a bit fancier. However, I would use the recipes, the flavor combinations and all the great tips and copious pictures and instructions along with another book and maybe your own creativity.
I would really have liked to have the recipes listed by weight as well as volume or number. If a recipe calls for 1 1/2 eggs, is that three ounces? how do I measure half an egg?
