Book Reviews of We All Fall DownBook Review: Karma Summary: 5 Stars
""Maybe it isn't crap, after all." Harry said. "Because we all fall down, don't we?" His voice dry, sharp as ice cubes clinking" (62). Ring around the rosy is a olden children's rhyme talking about the black Plague and how people were stricken down dead with this terrible disease. The last few words of the rhyme are cleverly, "we all fall down," which is also the title of the intriguing novel We all Fall Down, written by Robert Cormier. Robert Cormier grew up in Leominster in Massachusetts, married and now has four children. Cormier was once a newsreporter and collumist, but was inspired by many news events and switched to a novelist. Cormier has written several classics includuing, The Chocolate Wars, and I am the Cheese. We all fall Down is expressed as a main theme of Karma throughout the book. Karma means your actions during your life will come back to affect your future, and your bad actions will come back to haunt you.
We all fall Down is a horror, thriller book, which grabs the attention quickly of all its readers. After the trashing of a home, the book goes on to show the after affects of a tragedy and how lives can change. Also the book provides the idea of deception and how people everyday can be deceiving one another, and that the people are not always what they seem to be. The setting of this book takes place in a Cape Cod town called Burnside and Wickburg. The main characters consist of three different views or interpretations of what is happening. One interpretation from the daughter living in the house, Jane Jerome. She expresses her views of the trashing and how her life has been changed drastically from these awful occurrences. The next interpretation of the book comes from one of the trashers, named Buddy Walker a junior from Wickburg, who falls in love with Jane. The last interpretation of the book comes from a mysterious eleven year old called the avenger, who watched the trashing take place. He decides to take on the responsibility of finding the trashers and killing them one by one. Other smaller characters are Harry Flowers, Randy and Marty, the three other trashers. Also Karen is the young girl who is assaulted in the trashing of her home, Artie, Karen and Jane's brother, Addy, Buddy walkers' sister, and Jane's mother and father. Finally there are two important characters in the book who are only mentioned a few times, Amos Dalton a young neighborhood boy and finally Michael Rooney, or Michael Looney the neighborhood fix it man.
"What happened the other night, you enjoyed it. You got your kicks. You're probably having conscience trouble now, but you had fun that night" (63). This quotations expresses the main theme of this book, as mentioned before as karma, and that peoples actions can come back to haunt them. Even though these kids had their fun they have conscience issues and realize what they did will come back to affect them in the future. Throughout the book many people commit awful crimes and disturb the peace of this quiet Cape Cod town, and in the end their disturbances and afflictions come back to either ruin their lives or even kill them. Cormier's writing is creative yet mystical. He writes with a unique description and really makes the reader think and imagine what is really happening. Cormier uses great thematic ideas and elements to further explain his book. His creativity and quality of writing makes this book impossible to put down. All in all, this book has been one of my favorites of all time. I have never read a book that I was unable to put down. This book immediately grabbed my attention and was quick moving and very mysterious. The book started off the first page and kept me thinking until I closed it. Also a new surprise occurrs every other page. I suggest that everyone pick this book up and read it. If people enjoy reading creative mysteries and beautifully written books, I suggest this book.
Summary of We All Fall DownThey entered the house at 9:02 P.M. and trashed their way through the Cape Cod cottage. At 9:46 P.M. Karen Jerome made the mistake of arriving home early. Thrown down the basement stairs, Karen slips into a coma. The trashers slip away.
But The Avenger has seen it all.
