Book Reviews of War As They Knew It: Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, and America in a Time of Unrest

Book Review: Two Great Men at a Very Tough Time On College Campuses
Summary: 5 Stars

Unlike one of the reviews I read, this actually spent more than one chapter on the era of college unrest. It mentions the "long hairs", the players actually speaking for them selves about their "rights", and the asst. coaches coming forward and standing up to Woody and Bo (which was unheard of earlier in their careeres). The games play and talked about even reflect some of this era. I know first hand. I was at Ohio State Univ. during those riots and protests. I was at the rally where Woody spoke to the students. After he spoke the whole thing was over. I was among some of the first students to leave the rally. What no one knew at the time was there were tear gas, and mustard gas launchers postioned behind the buildings on the Oval. They were all set to launch if a problem, (riot), started. The funny that hit me, when I saw all the National Guard positioned, was that Woody had to know about these positions. He never spoke of them in his speech or threatened the students with what could have happened. Woody always thought that if you started something then finish it and do it correctly in the right way. I won't go in to all he said, but it didn't include the throwing of marshmellows at the guard like hang gernades, or throwing paint on Mershan Hall and the student union buildings. He spoke of what should be done if the students were serious, or end this and go back to getting an education. Yes, football is a really important part of Ohio State and the "team up north". But if investigated you find many programs and even lesser attended sports are sponsered from this football program. I came to really respect Woody. I took his coaching class, which only had a little to do with coaching, and more about life. I am sure it was the same way with Bo. The other reason I know is because I tried to walk on in 1970. I did it because of how Woody treated the people who "really tried", but couldn't quite succeed. To him success was the act of trying. I was injured the first day, which led to me having a straight leg. Would I change it? Not for a million dollars! I now have a "Buckeye Room" in may house. And the most important thing I learned from Woody is stenciled on the entrance to the room. It says, "You can't pay back, but you can pay forward". To me that says it all. Yes, I would highly recommend this book.

Summary of War As They Knew It: Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, and America in a Time of Unrest

The Vietnam War . . .

Nixon . . .

Kent State . . .

The late 1960s and early 1970s were a time of total turmoil in America-the country was being torn apart by a war most people didn't support, young men were being taken away by the draft, and racial tensions were high. Nowhere was this turmoil more evident than on college campuses, the epicenters of the protest movement.

The uncertain times presented a challenge to two of the greatest football coaches of all time. Woody Hayes, the legendary archconservative coach of Ohio State, feared for the future of America. His protégé and rival, Bo Schembechler of the University of Michigan, didn't want to be bothered by these "distractions." Hayes worshipped General George S. Patton and was friends with President Richard Nixon. Schembechler befriended President Gerald Ford, a former captain and team MVP for the Wolverines.

In this enthralling book, Michael Rosenberg dramatically weaves the campus unrest and political upheaval into the story of Hayes and Schembechler. Their rivalry began with Schembechler arriving in protest-heavy Ann Arbor, Michigan, at the height of the Vietnam War. It ended with Hayes wondering what had happened to his country. War As They Knew It is a sobering and fascinating look at two iconic coaches and a different generation.
