SLOW IN THE START BUT GOT BETTER!
Book Review: A worthy addition to the series Summary: 4 Stars
This is the second novel by Steve Perry in the AvP series and the third in the overall series. Curiously, it's the second, chronologically, being a direct sequel to AvP: Prey and coming before Hunter's Planet. This, like Prey, is an adaptation from a dark horse comic series by the same title. And like Prey, Steve Perry's knack for fleshing out characters for an overall more expansive effect is in full play. However, unlike its predecessor, this version isn't just a little bit better than the comic, it's SUBSTANTIALLY superior. Perry has transformed a flat, frequently confusing comic into a multi-faceted set piece that does well to expand the AvP universe far more effectively than the films. Originally, the characters felt two-dimensional. In Perry's novel, even minor characters feel well-rounded and motivated. However, the novel does have one of the comic's downfalls, albiet to a lesser degree: War was a sequel to not one comic series, but two. The story follows both Machiko Noguchi, the displaced human-turned-hunter of AvP comic fame, and the survivors of an Alien-killer team from the obscure comic series Aliens: Berserker. While Perry does a much better job of explaining the events of Berserker than the War graphic novel did, it can still feel as if you've missed something if you haven't read both of War's parent stories in some form. That aside, it's a real treat for the AvP fan and a fast read to boot.
Book Review: S.D. Perry rules! Summary: 4 Stars
I really liked this book, actually stayed up till 5 in the morning to finish it. S.D. Perry is unquestionably the best author in the Aliens and Aliens vs. Predator series and this book doesn't fail to dissapoint. The characters are strong, the action is graphic, and the atmosphere is dark and disturbing, just the way an Aliens novel should be. If anything, my only complaint would be that it was too short. She could have developed the plot a lot more, but it's a small enough complaint. Another review mentioned the error that was made in the timeline. I noticed it too, but honestly didn't care. I thought "Hunter's Planet" was awful, worth forgetting about. For anyone who hasn't started this series yet, read Aliens vs. Predator: Prey first, skip Hunter's Planet and read Aliens: Berserker instead.
