Book Reviews of Walk Two MoonsBook Review: A very good story Summary: 4 Stars
I recommend this story because it's funny, touching and meaningful. I'm very glad that I read this and I bought a copy for my family to read too. I don't read young adult literature often, but I'm glad that I read about Sal, Phoebe and the whole cast of interesting characters. Huzza Huzza!
Book Review: One could find a better book Summary: 2 Stars
Walk Two Moons felt like the kind of book my English teacher assigned in Junior High: obnoxiously pedantic prose coupled with an overt, over-the-top message, all wrapped in the trappings of characters with unbelievable traits in impossible situations.
The main character, Salamanca ("Sal"), is going on a cross-country journey to visit her mother. The author, Sharon Creech, attempts to tell a story-within-a-story, as Sal recounts the tale of her friend's family. It is not possible to critique the overarching plot without utterly spoiling it, so I will not go into detail. I will say, however, that I found the whole purpose of the trip ridiculous - the father and grandparents, if not fictitious, would certainly have put poor Sal into a lifetime of therapy. Their actions are simply too ridiculous to be believed.
This leads me to my final complaint: Events in Walk Two Moons are too circumstantial - why does Sal's entire life go awry? The only answer I could deduce is that Junior High English teachers love passing off depression as a substitute for thought-provoking life studies.
In short, I'd suggesting skipping this book.
