Book Reviews of Voyager (Outlander)

Book Review: Great series but some parts not believable
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this series and have been reading straight through from Outlander to Voyager. Diana Gabaldon has done an heroic job of making her characters so endearing, so multidimensional -- I think about them often the way I think about a friend and feel like I know them; she's made me care about them so much. Her dedication to detail and to layering of each character is a gift.

The only thing is there are some parts that are not believable:
* I couldn't believe how easily Claire's daughter, Brianna, accepted the idea of Jamie as her father. I know Roger and Claire presented her with the evidence but what little anger or outrage she showed was short lived. She went from outrage at her mother even suggesting that Claire's first husband, Frank, was not really her father to a giddy declaration of Jamie as "Daddy!" I found it strange that there was very little confusion or anger with her mother at all this news. I guess the story had to move along so the author couldn't linger on this point.
* Aside from the odd mention of the woman's "courses," I was kind of surprised at the lack of mention at how menstruation was handled, practically, by a woman at this time in history. There's such detail about the way people prepared food, bathed, etc. at that time and was surprised by this omission.

These are minor flaws for a remarkable series... If you are looking for a one-of-a-kind historical/romantic series, start with Outlander and keep going!

Book Review: Simply Amazing!
Summary: 5 Stars

Some years ago I had started to read this series and made it halfway through Dragonfly in Amber before I stopped, for some reason. Not too long ago I decided to begin the series again and have not been able to put them down since! The story of Claire and Jamie is absolutely amazing...Diana Gabaldon has the knack of bringing you right into the world of Claire and Jamie, so much so that you can picture everything with perfect clarity. I just started reading Voyager 3 days ago and I am almost done with it. Once you start reading, it is extremely hard to put the book down. And I must say that these books are the only ones that have ever brought tears to my eyes! The stories are so interesting that despite the length of each of the books, you fly right through them as if they were merely a couple of chapters. Diana writes them with such attention to historical details, that I don't find myself saying "that never happened that way!" In fact, in my research into Highland history, I came across a story of a John Fraser who in fact survived the killings after the battle of Culloden, as Jamie did, although he was injured much worse than Jamie was!

I am so glad that I gave this series a second chance, and will be quite sad once I have finished them, I will more than likely go back and give each and every one a second read!!

Book Review: The greatest reunion ever...
Summary: 5 Stars

Okay, I said that "Dragonfly in Amber" was my favorite in the series, but after reading the first three books for a second time, I think that "Voyager" is now the favorite by the slightest margin. Claire undergoes the time travel for the second time after she discovers that Jamie survived the battle of Culloden. When I finally got to the scene when Jamie and Claire were reunited, I couldn't breathe. Never was a moment in literature so anticipated and so enthralling that you can't help but read it over again and again. And then there was the when Claire finds out that Jamie is married, and the greatest (and hottest) fight scene goes down between the two. I read that scene about four times.

Like the previous two books, Gabaldon keeps you entertained from front to back, just one adventure right after the other. You even wonder how she comes up with all of this stuff. Only the imagination of a literary goddess has that ability.

I have Voyager and the rest in the series like my grandma had "Gone with the Wind" when she was a young woman. God bless Diana Gabaldon and her ability to spin such a lovely, fascinating tale about two people so in love, a love that should be experienced by everyone.

Book Review: Review from One Book At A Time http://onebooktime.blogspot.com
Summary: 5 Stars

At the start of this book, I was afraid it wasn't going to live up to the first two. It took me awhile to figure out why I wasn't liking it as much. While I enjoyed learning about Jamie and Claire after they were separated, it's the two of them together that make this series so special. And then I realized that story of their 20 years apart is important too. As a reader we need to understand how much of an influence they had on one another. That even after 20 years (not to mention 2 centuries), they still hold those outstanding feelings for each other. But, I have to admit, that moment in the print shop was what I was waiting for! This book takes you on a ride. It's not stop action with all that heart stopping romance in between. It's suspenseful, and at times I really wondered if Jamie and/or Claire was going to get out of whatever situation they managed to find themselves in. It had some major shocks and twists in it, things that I was down right not expecting. And, at times I wondered if 20 years of separation was just too much to overcome. At the end of the story, I was left with a book that rivals my first love of Outlander! I was amazed at the story Diana Gabaldon has managed to create.

Book Review: Adventure Unfolds
Summary: 5 Stars

The Battle of Culloden (1745) destroyed the Scottish nation, which only in recent years has regained national sovereignty. I was hooked before OUTLANDER because my own ancestors were expelled from Scotland after the 1715 rebellion to become the Scotch-Irish who emigrated from Ireland in 1721 bringing the red hair and green eyes with them. The very interesting thing about these early Americans is that both the men and women could read and write.
Diana Gabaldon creates outstanding characters who bring them to vivid life, not just faded names on deeds, wills, and church records. The VOYAGER bring Claire Randall and James Fraizer back together again and moves them through many adventures including Jamie's sea sickness to the shores of the American continent.
The historical details and events are so accurate you hang on every word for the thrill of what will happen next and a window into the journey taken by your own.
Who can resist a love story so powerful and enduring it transcends time like that of Tristan and Isolde to become a part of the fabric of our language?
