Book Review: A WELCOME FRENCH TRANSLATION OF A LANDMARK IN PATRISTIC SPIRITUALITY BY OUR GREATEST AMERICAN CATHOLIC BENEDICTINE AUTHORITY

American Catholic Benedictine Sister (and sometimes prioress) Joan Chittister finds here in response to the deeply spiritual and scholastic value of her prolific writing, the translation into French of her great hermeneutic Patristic work Illuminated Life: Monastic Wisdom for Seekers of Light.
As one reviewer describes that monumental labor on its own product page: "The purpose of Illuminated Life is to teach us to be contemplative in the midst of chaos. To facilitate this, Chittister divides her book into a series of alphabetized meditations on spiritual qualities ranging from 'Awareness' to 'Zeal.' Each meditation begins with a story from one of the early Christian Desert Mystics and follows with an essay that moves the reader from principle to praxis."
Thus we discover here a very careful and scholarly selection of the familiar apophthegmes and sayings of the ancient Desert Fathers of Palestine and Egypt, thematically and alphabetically arranged. This is one of the graces of the translation into French as well.
Other sources for this Patristic theology may be found in the writings, principally in Frnech but also available in a very few English translations by the late monk of Solesmes Dom Lucien Regnault, well known for such works as A l'?coute des P?res du d?sert aujourd'hui and The Day-to-Day Life of the Desert Fathers: In Fourth-Century Egypt.. The rest of his magnificent labors are available in the original directly from the Abbay of Saint Peter in Solesmes, although some has most tragically gone out of print. Other well known authorities in English are of course Benedicta Ward in her The Desert Fathers: Sayings of the Early Christian Monks (Penguin Classics). In fact a search of this amazon with the parameters "desert fathers" uncovers a vast teasure trove in this field of Patristics.
We must never assume, of course, that there were not also Desert Mothers, as related for instance in the intriguing work Harlots of the Desert: A Study of Repentance in Early Monastic Sources (Cistercian Studies Series, 106) by the same Benedicta Ward. Ths is also a rich and a nourishing field for lectio divina, an area also explored by Dom Lucien Regnault, my prior while I lived inside Solesmes.
One cannot help but note in passing the improvement in moving from English into French of the cover as well, which although it remains irrelevant to the Desert hermits, nevertheless is more aesthetically pleasing. The English shares a page from a mediaeval illuminated text of a contemporary cleric reading. The French text covers itself with the image of an inner cloister of a similarly later monastic period, a wonderful photograph which suggests one of the inner prayer walks of Solesmes herself. This in itself serves as a richly rewarding architectural object for contemplation and prayer.
