Book Reviews of Visual Poetry: A Creative Guide for Making Engaging Digital Photographs

Book Review: Changed My Perspective as an Author
Summary: 5 Stars

As an author, I rarely come across a book which makes me think, "Wow! Why didn't I think of this?!" But, I must admit, Chris Orwig's "Visual Poetry" is beyond the blessings bestowed upon me. I've never met Chris, but maybe, someday, I will have the honor.

I can see myself photographing many of the same images which Chris captured. There's a certain beauty when one author connects with another author.

I must confess that Chris has a far greater literary style than myself. He makes me rethink my own editorial directions. Chris writes with the panache of an author who understands verse.

Since Janet, my wife and business partner, and I have had less than a 25% chance of survival, after severe brain "insults," I've been forced into studying how the brain works. Chris's brain works like no other creative talent who I have ever stumbled upon.

The late great Mike Pocklington, who is featured in our most recent book, had a very fine mind to look deep into an image and see what others cannot see. Chris has moved that further forward with an ability to analyze the visual process. He takes creativity and organizes it into a formal structure. We once spent a couple days, with a creative consultant, who was capable of doing the same, to help creative professionals exceed what is considered great. In his second chapter, "Creativity and Photography," Chris breaks down the creative process in very specific terms.

His third chapter, "Learning to See." tells us much of what we wish all image-makers know. Creativity is not all in your free-form mind. There's a very structured process to how an image comes to be. Similarly, "Camera Creativity and Technique," the fourth chapter, isn't all that technical. True to the rest of the book, this chapter, looks at some of the technology available to us, in overview. To talk about that technology would fill a few dozen volumes. However, this author has wisely chosen to focus on the broader perspective. In this chapter, Chris gets into many of the areas Janet & I have addressed in our books.

I appreciate how Chris goes off in his own creative directions which are very much unlike my own. In the fifth chapter, his portraits are so different than mine that I tend to celebrate them. His way of exploring an image is very much different than my own and it makes me step back and rethink some things.

One of the greatest joys of my career are not those big "grab you" shots, which make covers. It's photos of my favorite kids on the entire planet. Chris's sixth chapter continues to move onward with introspective views of photographing children. The same is true of the seventh chapter on wedding photography. Let's face it, a zillion books have been written on that subject. Some great shooters knock out some fabulous images, every week, on these event opportunities. It's extremely tough to show me something new on this topic. Chris doesn't try to regurgitate what many others have already said. He gets under the hood and calls the reader to revisit the structure of their approach to one of the most important aspects of the profession.

In July of 1965 my Pennsylvania parents took me on a vacation to Virginia where I journaled every day of the trip. This was a life changer. Not only was I writing; I was photographing the beauty of the Commonwealth and deconstructing all of the postcards' and View Master photos I could find. Again, Chris rips down this otherwise simple and usually less then stellar efforts into how to improve upon what takes point and shoot into how you should re-set your brain to do super travel shots.

As much as I admire this book, I didn't connect with the tenth chapter on found images. If a second edition of this gets out the door, there's a need to revise this section. It seems a little incomplete but it does not cause me to downgrade it, radically. I know as an author, that when you get to the back end of a book, it's challenging. You don't sleep much for about 90 days straight. The final chapter on the Path to Becoming a Professional makes it all worthwhile. I feel like I was in the eyes of a college professor at the end of the last semester of the senior year. There's love here. I'd like to give the whole book four and a half stars, but that not a possibility. So, I have to defer to five.

Summary of Visual Poetry: A Creative Guide for Making Engaging Digital Photographs

A great photograph has the potential to transcend verbal and written language. But how do you create these photographs? It?s not the how that?s important, but the who and the what. Who you are as a person has a direct impact on what you capture as a photographer.

Whether you are an amateur or professional, architect or acupuncturist, physician or photographer, this guide provides inspiration, simple techniques, and assignments to boost your creative process and improve your digital images using natural light without additional gear.

Chris Orwig?s insights?to reduce and simplify, participate rather than critique, and capture a story?have made him an immensely popular workshop speaker and faculty member at the prestigious Brooks Institute. His engaging stories presented as lessons follow his classroom approach and highlight what students say is his contagious passion for life.
