Jack's subject doesn't change . Visions of Cody is the same as his earlier book,On The Road. The difference is this is a book of greater depth and complexity than any of his other work. The beat writers were all interested in the art of painting,jazz and movies. This book was written as a movie scenario.I don't mean he wanted to become a movie . But that film influenced his vision of his experiences.This work is a book of greater sophistication than the earlier study of his friend.On The Road is a good read, Visions of Cody is a fascinating read.All of the criticism of Kerouac is that it is subjective, but in this book I find that what counts is Jack's command of the formal properties of writing, structure and inventive organization. Summary of Visions of Cody (Modern classic)
Kerouac's classic fictional tribute to Neal Cassady. Many years before its first unabridged publication, 'Visions of Cody' became an underground classic. Written by Kerouac at his creative zenith, the book is a celebration of the life of Neal Cassady, his great friend and inspiration. Appearing here as Cody Pomeray, Cassady was also immortalised as Dean Moriarty in 'On the Road'. The son of a drunken Denver drop-out, brought up homeless and motherless during the Depression, Cassady lived his life raw -- hustling in pool halls, stealing cars for marathon joy rides across the States, living wild and penniless amongst society's misfits and outcasts. He left a sizzling reputation in his wake, becoming the insane Beat Demon of San Francisco.
