As the title implies, "Viking Age Headcovering From Dublin" is a technical catalogue and report of the analysis of certain textile finds from an archaeological site in Dublin, Ireland, as a result of which the author concludes that the textiles found had been used as headcoverings, most likely women's head coverings. The hard data of textile size, condition, fiber type and count, type of weave, thread count and thread size, and information as to whether fringes or sewing stitches appear on each item are present, along with more unusual information such as the results of tests for the presence of dyes and whether hairs found embedded in the textiles were human.
On the other hand, the book also includes sketches of how the various textiles might have been used as headcoverings, concise, well-written analyses and comparisons of women's headwear in art of the period, photographs of some of the more complete finds, and a clear description from which a determined reenactor or costumer could make a similar cap.
In short, this book is a true find for archaeologists, reenactors, and costumers who are interested in costume in Viking Age Iceland. It is well worth the price.

This book contains an analysis of 68 textiles related in type, weave and function from 10th and 11th-century levels at FishambleStreet/Johns Lane and mid-11th to late 12th-century levels at High Street, Dublin. They were found as part of the excavations carried out between 1961-1981. The book discusses sewing practices and the use of textiles for headcoverings.
