Book Reviews of Vigil

Book Review: Almost as good as Bestiary
Summary: 4 Stars

I picked up Vigil after reading in the back of Bestiary that a character is a continuation, but you don't need to read one before the other. Both books are stand-alone and are enjoyable. Vigil starts off like all thrillers - hits you over the head with a hammer of suspense - then, like all thrillers, sort of slows down to get into the plot. There are several missed branches that the story can take (don't get too tied up into the fact that there is 'something' in the basement of the science building, as that peters out after its mentioning.) Still, enjoyable to read.

Book Review: 3.5 score for a book that could have been better
Summary: 3 Stars

This book had so much potential and it caught me right away as something that had a little bit of everything...suspense, science, horror, etc. It went really far and at first it was really gripping and interesting, but after a while it lost a lot of steam and so many questions went unanswered. Questions I would have liked answered: What happened to Ezra at the end and why did he end up in a mental institution? What happened to the Dead Sea Scrolls in the sanitarium across the street from the hospital? Why was Beth bleeding and what happened to her friend Abbie? Is the baby the son of Arius and what happened to Arius? Why didn't Carter just tell the truth and say that Mitchell wasn't supposed to be in the lab? What did Carter tell the police after he dropped off the door knob with the finger prints on them? What was up with Arius' damaged finger?
There were soooo many questions left unanswered and the ending seemed so anti-climactic and hurried that it just seemed that the author ran out of steam. Another thing that bothered me is the picture on the cover and the fossil mentioned in the book looks like a pterodactyl with claws not some quasi human/angel type creature. What gives?

Book Review: Mini-Review: Good concept, disappointing execution
Summary: 3 Stars

There have been some interesting, purportedly non-fiction books about the book of Enoch, the Watchers, and so forth, all of which provide a terrific backdrop for a suspenseful horror novel. The author capitalized on the concept with a bifurcated story line that kept me turning pages for quite awhile. Sadly, however, he ran out of steam. The end of the book is predictable (and not in a good way) and an unsatisfying conclusion to a tale that began with such promise.

Book Review: Great Read
Summary: 5 Stars

I thought this was a super book. Entertaining and fast paced. Looking forward to another one from this author.

Book Review: Vigil - Another winner!
Summary: 5 Stars

Masello continues his excellent character building and plot weaving with his latest, Vigil. With just enough basis in reality and a nice mix of 'what if's', the reader is compelled to attempt to read this book in one sitting. What really was in that fossil? Could it be possible? Nicely done work. I can hardly wait for his next.
