My study of Vietnamese began in 1965 with Nguyen Dinh Hoa's books. I own no small number of Vietnamese dictionaries, carry my Lonely Planet Vietnamese phrase book around with me when I am in country, and review my FSI and Rosetta Stone materials regularly. Despite the fact that my accent occasionally sounds better than it should, I have never obtained more than a basic ability with spoken Vietnamese. (My reading ability is much better) Healy's book contains all the flaws noted, and yet it is worthwhile. It is logically presented, forces the student to engage, and imparts enough basic vocabulary and grammar to aid you on your way. I therefore rate it as highly useful and use it to supplement my other materials. Simply put, there is no way to learn a language as difficult as Vietnamese without investing the sweat. If you are willing to do so, Dana Healy's book is worth both your money and effort. My bookseller, by the way, shortchanged me. Mine did not come with the tape.
