Book Review: Very good, concise account

The ANZAC contribution to the Vietnam War was a relatively new topic to me. I'd been aware that a fair number of Australians and a proportionately smaller number of New Zealanders had been involved alongside US forces in the anti-Communist campaign there, but I didn't know much detail about who they were and what they did. This little book did a great job of filling me in.
It goes into great detail about the different units, their organization, their gear, and a few of their more important operations. I particularly liked the parts dealing with the tactical differences between the ANZACs & the Americans. The ANZACs fought more like the Brits in Malaya (and, actually, a lot of the ANZACs had fought alongside the Brits in that campaign.) They relied on smaller units with less firepower; in other words, they used low-key, stealthy patrol tactics rather than large units and massive fire support (the latter being the American way.) The US military tends to be really good at fighting other large, conventional forces, but less able at countering insurgent threats. This legacy can still be seen today -- the Aussie & British forces in Iraq, for example, still tend to be more comfortable with small units and low-key counterinsurgency tactics than the Americans, though to be fair the American forces have adapted a lot in the last few years.
Anyway, my only complaint was that I wanted a little bit more info on weaponry. Most of the information about ANZAC weaponry comes obliquely, as captions for the book's excellent photos. I wanted to know a little more specifics about exactly what the ANZACs used, and when. The author gave so much detail on other aspects of the ANZACs' gear that I was surprised how little weaponry was discussed. Still, this book is a gem.

The part played by Australian and New Zealand troops in the Vietnam War is sometimes overlooked; but it is generally accepted that the 'Diggers' and 'Kiwis' were among the most effective and professional troops involved. Drawing upon the ANZACs' long experience in the jungles of South East Asia, the men of the Task Force used their expertise in patrol tactics to great effect to frustrate Viet Cong operations. Meanwhile the ANZACs' small and isolated adviser teams spent ten years passing on their skills all over South Vietnam, and in the process four were awarded the supreme decoration for valour - the Victoria Cross. This book pays tribute to their military prowess, and describes and illustrates their uniforms and equipment in unprecedented detail.General Books
