If you've been to Venice, you know that getting anywhere requires a remarkably good map. Walking to any destination you can't see in front of you is an exercise in map reading and navigation. Since you consult your map at virtually every corner of a street, passage, bridge, or campo, it's all the more desirable to have a map that fits in your pocket. The challenge is for that map to be simultaneously small enough, detailed enough (and boy, is there a lot of detail in Venice), and readable. This popout map of Venice, of the several I've tried on three visits, is the best one I've found.
There probably is no perfect solution to a map of Venice that fits in your pocket, given the complexity of the place, but this is the one I recommend getting while waiting for perfection to come along.
