Book Reviews of Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith

Book Review: What a refreshing book...
Summary: 5 Stars

"Just because I'm a Christian and I'm trying to articulate a Christian worldview doesn't mean I've got it nailed. I'm contributing to the discussion. God has spoken, and the rest is commentary, right?" Rob Bell commands the attention of his readers, even down to the blip on the back of the book. He encourages his readers to look at the Christian faith a little differently, from biblical history that describes Jesus as a real person to ideas of the Christian individual's role as a witness, with the environment, and in the church. Bell does not ask the reader to agree with him; in fact, he begs that the reader test and probe what he says. "Don't swallow it uncritically. Think about it. Wrestle with it." I just love that Bell is so humble--that he offers a lot of truth in the book, yet begs the reader to question it. It's time for the true Christianity to step forward. People like Rob Bell, who know they don't have it all right but keep at it, are the people who are leading the pack.

Book Review: Thought provoking reading
Summary: 5 Stars

The book takes you on a little bit of a spiritual journey, which at times makes you think and at other times makes you glad you don't have to. The author has made a call to action for all of us that don't necessarily believe that religion has to remain static. It can grow and change and adapt. I would recommend this book to anyone that has at any time in life had a difficult time drawing the distinction between religion/faith and the church. He points out that you have to find the church that speaks to your faith rather than just accepting what the establishment of the church has to offer. Rob Bell brings forward ideas that are not only applicable to the young and energetic that are looking for a way to God, but also to the young at heart. He paints a picture of religion where people care about each other as much as they do about the status of being religious, in this case Christian. I don't think anyone can say enough good things about this book, so just buy it and see for yourself!

Book Review: Whoops!
Summary: 5 Stars

Whoops!

Are we searching for 'truth' in all the wrong places?

Is 'truth' found in theology itself or is theology a way of 'doing the Rabbi thing?' Jesus said HE (a person) is the way, the 'truth,' the Life, the living picture or demonstration of the Father.

Is 'truth' found in the Bible itself or is the written Scripture a testimony (via history, law, example, instruction, poetry, promise, good news, and marvelous stories) that opens a window to God? Paul mentioned that creation itself is a window that provides clear evidence of God. Jesus told some of his God-honoring brothers that they diligently search Scriptures in vain in order to own eternal life, (life in another dimension beyond time and space, the life of God himself -- full, complete, abundant). Jesus also told them that Scripture testifies to himself, Jesus, and all they really need to do is come to him. (John 5 39-40)

I am not sure we can certify 'truth'.....

Book Review: Peace, Hope, Love in God's Holiness for Those Who Have Been Hurt By 'Christians
Summary: 5 Stars

Wow! I was completely floored by this book. Having read several of the negative reviews on Amazon, I was not really sure what to expect. As much as I am able to believe in providence, this book at this time was about the most needed for me. That being said, I think this book provides the most relief for some people like me, the "bitter, cynical, jaded, and hard."

Some of the comments that say Bell is unorthodox has nothing to do with orthodoxy. His theology is solid from both the Bible and the Patristics. I think the reason why Bell repels so many people is that these same people see being hurt by the church as acceptable. In many ways, Bell's book could be titled, "Peace, Hope, Love in God's Holiness for Those Who Have Been Hurt By 'Christians.'"

I really don't have anything to say that is not already posted in another review. I rarely give non-academic "Christian" books five stars, but this was exceptional.

Book Review: READ THIS BOOK!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Before I decided to read this book my friends kept telling me, "If you're comfortable with your faith, don't read this book," to which I replied, "If you're comfortable with your faith then something is wrong." If we don't challenge our faith, then how will we ever develop spiritually?

That's exactly what this book is about: challenging and questioning our faith. Bell takes us into the world of questioning ALL THINGS in search of truth. Question yourself, question the church, question your beliefs, question religious principles and doctrines, question culture, and even question the Holy Bible and how we use it.

Along with Bell's profound insights and wisdom, he provides an abundant list of commentary, references, resources, and literature to explore certain points more in depth. This book will challenge you. It may even change you. Above all else, this book will help bring you more in-tune with God.
