Book Reviews of Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith

Book Review: Rob Bell achives his goal
Summary: 5 Stars

Many books recently seem to offer a step-by-step process to the Christian faith (Osteen's "Your Best Life Now") or a spititual pep-rally (McManus' "The Barbarian Way"), yet "Velvet Elvis" offers the reader something quite different: a challenge. In this book, Bell's purpose is not to hit you upside the head with page after page of his own practical theology - it is to make you question yours.

Bell's style is captivating and his words are thought provoking. By diging into the Jewish history behind scripture and challenging the church's attitude towards serving others, the reader will find "Elvis" hard to put down. Most importantly, the reader is encouraged to never stop testing and probing what they hear or read, including this book. Perhaps those who find themselves disagreeing with what the author writes should take a moment to realize that in doing so - Bell has already achieved his goal.

Book Review: I loved this book!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am Christian, but yet a lot of other Christians really scare me to death, make me feel judged, get angry if I disagree with their political agenda, preach at me and claim to have all the answers. I find it completely bizarre and sometimes downright disturbing.

Rob Bell really hits the nail on the head in this book. He offers a liberal take on Christianity for those of us who believe fully in the teachings of Christ but just don't get the whole commercial Christian movement going on in the US today that sometimes seems more like a fascist cult than a community of love and support.

If more people read Velvet Elvis, and if more pastors and priests took the attitude in this book, there would be a heck of a lot more people following Christ. The tone of the book is open, welcoming, and non-judgmental. Isn't that exactly what Christianity is supposed to be?

First, a brief timeout for a word from our sponsor:

"By this everyone will know that you
are my disciples, if you love one another." -Jesus

Okay, I like Rob. Hey, he's a likable guy. But he is not my leader. (I think he would agree that spot is already taken...)The beautiful and vital thing that Rob does is voice things that others find hard to articulate. Whether you want to throw stones at him or not, he does speak desires, questions, beliefs, struggles, journeys, etc. that are real and are about as contextual as you can get. Whether or not you agree with him or not, you cannot escape that truth. And I believe truth is what Jesus calls us to seek and confront head-on, IN LOVE.

So, yep, read the book. Struggling with who God is is good for you--just ask Jacob. They named a people after him.

Book Review: Velvet Elvis Will Rock Your World (In A Good Way)
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the most hopeful books I have ever read. Bell paint a beautiful picture of what faith, church and Christianity could be (and was, and is). He has articulated things that I have wanted to say but didn't have the words for. He has given me fresh insights and ideas that weren't even on my radar. He has challenged and stretched me with Velvet Elvis. Read this book! Even if you disagree with the things that Bell proposes, you must consider his ideas. If you disagree with the picture he paints, you had better be able to articulate why because this message is resonating with people everywhere, those who already consider themselves to be "christians", those who had given up on their faith, and those who have never found Jesus, God or church that interesting before.

Book Review: I'm speechless
Summary: 5 Stars

Geez, I don't know what to say about this book. All I can say is, after reading this book, I:

1. Understand the Bible more;
2. Focus on Jesus more;
3. Love my neighbors more;
4. Understand suffering more; and
5. Want to walk in His ways daily!

People who have read it and claimed that it's false teaching are apparently trying to nitpick!

When we want to nitpick, we can do it with anything, including the Bible!

Just look at the number of positive reviews in Amazon- more than 119 5-star reviews! I've read tons of books over the years; enough to start a library myself. Trust me, I know my stuff. For a book to have so many positive reviews is no small feat.

I heartily recommend it!
