Book Reviews of Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith

Book Review: I don't understand...
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't understand how a book like this one, which speaks of love and a God who loves you, could spark so much harsh criticism! I understand how the set up of the book could be a little confusing, but he is writing similar to the way he speaks - in fragments that ask YOU to finish the thought. Rob seems to have written this book in the same format that the Nooma DVD's are taught- teaching followed by short fragmented statements that are not complete by themselves. He is inspiring critical thinking, He knows that the way most people learn and change is usually by an idea or decision they come up with themselves and not mindless acceptance of someone elses ideas . If you want to read a book that tells you directly how to live in 5 steps, or tells you how to follow Jesus perfectly then this book is not for you! Rob is not offering a self help book, but a God help book! Because he understands that to answer the big questions you should not be asking the created, but the creator directly ! I recommend this book. It has inspired me and also caused me to ask questions that only God can answer. Hope this helps.

Book Review: Deep
Summary: 5 Stars

Some of the concepts Bell address in this book were in the depths of my heart. Humbled. Awed. Inspired. Community. The reality beyond words. Jesus.

Criticisms I've heard in conversations about this book include more about what he didn't write about then what he did. Homosexualtiy? Abortion? War?
True, Bell dosent specifically address some of the really ugly modern debates directly. I did't think that was the point of the book.

I think the point was more central to how a person chooses to exist in the world. I had never before imagined the Trampoline idea and the supportive springs being like church doctorines. That is an amazing and tangible visual framework for people like me- not a profound theologian. Jumping for joy. So now I'm inspired again to read the Bible!

My favorite quote from the book.

'God has spoken and the rest is commentary.'

Right. It groups all other words spoken or written or thought of by man into their humble places. Interpretation. Commentary.

Book Review: Great Book

Love Wins. The Simpliest way to describe a hard to simplfy book.

This book spoke to me more than The Purpose Driven life did ,although PDL is still an excellent book.

I am re-reading it again. Forget the critics. I reccomend this to anyone who has disengaged from the Institutional frameworkings of religon and ritual. To those who long for the true Community of Christ as spoken of in the book.Rob Bell has written a book full of theology that as he says "has springs" challenging us as readers to look at the Christian faith from it's spiritualy rich Jewish roots.

Its Theology without academic words that can at times in other books defer so much from the title that you put it down and never read it again....it's theology for a PUNK ROCK generation.

Rob Bell faces the myth of the Christian Christ and the need for a change in our perception, to the point of what happens when we follow the Real Christ, a Jewish Rabbi the Messiah.

I HIGHLY RECCOMEND THIS BOOK.

Book Review: A mere effort to get closer to the truth, not to alter it
Summary: 5 Stars

Rob is not emergent. He merely taps into postmodern concepts that are, in and of themselves, nothing but ways of viewing reality that better enable us to see life as it really is. He is not reformulating truth or the gospel. He affirms objective truth (as well as the Nicene Creed). So to the contrary, Rob is using new ways of thinking to restore a more complete and accurate representation of the Bible, Jesus, and what it means to live in Christ. Easily the most influential book I've ever read. But to those not acquainted with postmodern thinking, this book, like anything new, will frighten and confuse, resulting in negative comments and backlash. That is the hurdle for most with this book. Others, who wish to lord over the masses a tyrannical dogmatism, find this book to be nonsense - which is a major point of Rob's.

But to those of my generation and after, this is nothing but an intellectually and spiritually honest book - because we grew up in a postmodern world. Thus ignore this book at your own expense.

Book Review: Environmentalist, Spiritual but ...This book is for you!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a man that has a few chapters of life phase. First, I was a young republican believing survival of the fittest was inevitable. Second, I was a risk taker going to a start up on a hunch and experiencing the sky wasn't blue, water wasn't wet and money grew on trees until the Dotcom bubble crashed. Third, my eyes opened hiking the John Muir Trail solo for 30 days and realized the greatness and fragility of nature. Finally, I tip toed the line between religion & spirituality as a married man with a family to support. In this current chapter, I was handed the Green Bible NSRv and Velvet Elvis. I read this book and my life experience fell into place. I share with those around me my belief Velvet Elvis is a good gateway to loving the Lord and living in his kingdom. The Green Bible is with me whereever I go and Velvet Elvis is what I recommend anyone that has yet to believe God and Jesus loves each and everyone of us. Be what God intends us to be and live the good life.
