Book Reviews of Vegan ExpressBook Review: I am NOT Vegan Summary: 4 StarsAlthough I am not Vegan I do enjoy this book for ideas on salad, grains and pasta compositions. I substitute or add ingredients at will but follow the recipes for basic preparation. Healthy, simple and good!
Book Review: Easy, affordable, and healthful dishes Summary: 5 StarsNava Atlas has done a great job with Vegan Express. I am a college student and cannot afford a completely stocked pantry full of obscure ingredients. These recipes' ingredient lists are fairly short, full of easy to find ingredients. Also, each recipes included nutritional information which is very important to me. It seems many vegan and vegetarian cookbooks do not include a nutritional analysis along with each recipe. Being vegetarian, I like to know just what I am putting in my body so I stay healthy.
Definitely recommend this cookbook to anyone who has just began collecting vegan/vegetarian cookbooks. A great cookbook!
Book Review: Another great cookbook from Nava Atlas Summary: 5 StarsThis is my fifth (!) cookbook by Nava Atlas, and it does not disappoint.
I was hoping that this book would provide complete meals like an earlier book, Vegetarian Express. That book provided 3-dish meals, with shopping lists and the steps for cooking so everything ended up on the table at the same time. But this book just presents one recipe at a time, and it's organized like a typical cookbook (side dish salads in one chapter, sauces in another).
This organization does make it easier to add dishes to the repertoire without having to cook entirely new meals--a plus for those with picky eaters in the family. I find that my family is more likely to welcome a single new dish at a time.
The recipes are a good way to try more "exotic" flavors because they use common ingredients and they are not heavily spiced (but directions are included for adding heat if you like things spicier). And many of the recipes are not "exotic" looking so much as yummy looking! e.g., red lentil soup with fresh dill and crisp pita croutons, pasta with roasted vegetables and olives, and "our favorite chocolate cake."
The cookbook is very well-indexed, which makes it easy to choose a recipe that matches what I've already got in the fridge, and the directions are easy to follow. I especially like the full-color pictures of some of the dishes--I think I'll start cooking those first!
Book Review: Super fast recipes Summary: 4 StarsI'm really happy with this book. Although I wouldn't say the recipes are overly memorable, they are good basic recipes that can be fixed very quickly and call for ingredients that I usually have on hand. This is becoming my go-to book when I don't know what to fix for dinner.
The only minor complaint I have (and it really isn't a complaint at all) is that I wish the recipes were laid out as meals like they are in Vegetarian Express. I like not having to flip between different sections of the book when fixing a meal.
Book Review: A wonderful treat every time! Summary: 5 StarsI've had this book since around its release, and i have yet to be disappointed with a recipe! I make meals from this book often and am always surprised by how easy these recipes are to make. And after they're done I always get compliments from the family (all vegans like myself). I highly recommend this book to everyone ranging from the casual cook to the head chef. It suits all and never disappoints! *****
